Resistance 4 open-world concept explained by Days Gone director

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,
The concept of a Resistance 4 has been around for a long time, but Days Gone director Jeff Ross has explained an idea for an open-world version of the Insomniac FPS that was being talked about at Bend Studio.

Insomniac Games of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Marvel's Spider-Man, and Fuse fame had released a PlayStation 3 series of exclusive FPS games called Resistance. The trilogy of games is fast becoming cult favourites, despite being not that old at all. The director of Days Gone, Jeff Ross, has come out to ForTheWin to talk about Bend Studio's concept for a fourth in the series.

“The idea for that was just take things from the Resistance universe and have the mothership over the world,” says Jeff Ross. “That would be kind of cool, right? We can destroy that mothership and bring a Red Dawn approach to it like we’re just a bunch of rebels, a bunch of kids. We’re young guys and we’re going to somehow save the world.” Design manager Eric Jensen was the original creator of the idea.

“I just thought it would be really epic to see this mothership somewhere and know that was the endgame and have it always hovering in the sky,” Ross continues. “And then in the meantime, before you can attack it, you had to level up, you had to build factions, you had to build your army, you had to figure out how to get a ship to get up there or another way to get up there."

Further expanding on this idea, Ross explains that “the Resistance series already had a lot of really great character archetypes. There’s an implied ecosystem in terms of the aliens. Once they come up, they build technology, they start to dig up their tech and they start to use it to terraform and change the world. So it would have been a fight against the Chimeran infrastructure that was going to wipe out mankind.” Ross apparently noted that open-world tropes like sidequests, conversion centres, gun towers, and more were all baked into the IP.

Colin Moriarty of the Sacred Symbols podcast previously noted that a Resistance 4 was cancelled due to post-apocalyptic fatigue, but it is unlikely that the Bend game is the one Moriaty was referencing. What do you think of the news? Does it appeal? Let us know in the comments!

Hey, I'm Kes! I'm a Staff Writer, and I've been here since 2021. What do I like? The Outer Wilds is top notch. The Witcher 3 blew my mind over the course of five years completing it. I want Burnout back — I really miss crunching mechanical wonders into walls to the sound of Guns N' Roses. Cool, now we are acquainted, I'll see you around.
