E3 2022 fate left uncertain after COVID 19 restricts in-person attendance

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,
E3 2022 will not be in-person because of that accursed COVID-19, the Entertainment Software Association has confirmed. This marks the second year in a row that the games conference has suffered major setbacks.

Gamesbeat were given the following statement by the ESA: "Due to the ongoing health risks surrounding COVID-19 and its potential impact on the safety of exhibitors and attendees, E3 will not be held in person in 2022. We remain incredibly excited about the future of E3 and look forward to announcing more details soon." Last year, ESA replaced the in-person event with a digital one, which went reasonably well. However, when asked directly about this possibility, by Gamesbeat the response was that it is "excited about the possibilities of an online event," but offered no formal confirmation.

Mike Futter, the analyst, has made a pertinent point that the ESA might have already planned to bin off this year's event. His sources told him that "the ESA had abandoned their dates for the Los Angeles Convention Centre" back in November before the Omicron variant had surfaced. However, while Futter does mention that it is likely that the rise of COVID played a role again, given that ESA relies heavily on the profits of in-person attendance at its annual conference, no matter how small, the ESA probably wanted some kind of event in place.

Never fear! Geoff Keighley has confirmed that Summer Games Fest will return. We cant wait to see his face yet again. What do you think of this development? Will you miss E3? Let us know in the comments!

Hey, I'm Kes! I'm a Staff Writer, and I've been here since 2021. What do I like? The Outer Wilds is top notch. The Witcher 3 blew my mind over the course of five years completing it. I want Burnout back — I really miss crunching mechanical wonders into walls to the sound of Guns N' Roses. Cool, now we are acquainted, I'll see you around.
