PS VR 2 rumours suggest headsets will enter production soon

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,
PlayStation VR 2 was announced last year, but since the controller reveal, there has been no new info from Sony. Now, manufacturing rumours have suggested that the headset is entering full production thanks to hardware supplier GoerTek.

First and foremost, let's establish that these rumours are not in any way substantiated, but are being reported everywhere. The initial rumour stems from a Black Hair Sheriff 008 post on xueqiu that claims GoerTek has added more than 50% of its value on the stock market thanks to VR dealings with Meta's Quest 2 headset, though the Chinese company also has dealt with Sony by supplying components on the original PS VR, as reported by ctee. The Sheriff then suggests that this led them to believe that the PS VR 2 contract had been landed: "an order from a major Japanese customer... built a solid foundation for cooperation in the coming year to supply a new generation of VR."

This would suggest that Sony is making its way on the production of PS VR 2 in 2022, and that it should be primed for release in the same year. However, though the rumour makes sense logically — Sony is rumoured to have a Q1 event scheduled for this year — this story has a few flaws. The first is that Sheriff is a GoerTek stockholder which is a conflation of interest the author acknowledges. The second is that this was initially picked up by SadleyItsBradley, who reported that Sheriff was an insider — something that Sheriff Black 008 would later refute while stating that they didn't confirm any Sony manufacturing details of note in their article. In addition, PlayStation website PushSquare reached out to its sources and had nothing confirmed.

So, a bit of salt with this rumour, though it does seem plausible. What do you think? PS VR 2 for 2022? Are you excited about the virtual reality headset? Let us know in the comments!

Hey, I'm Kes! I'm a Staff Writer, and I've been here since 2021. What do I like? The Outer Wilds is top notch. The Witcher 3 blew my mind over the course of five years completing it. I want Burnout back — I really miss crunching mechanical wonders into walls to the sound of Guns N' Roses. Cool, now we are acquainted, I'll see you around.
