PlayStation Plus game Final Fantasy VII Remake PS5 version upgraded for free

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,
Final Fantasy VII Remake took the world by storm and landed as part of PlayStation Plus. In June, the PS5 version launched, while PlayStation Plus received the PS4 version with the PS5 upgrade locked behind a paywall. No longer!

Final Fantasy VII Remake for PS4 was offered up in March. Publisher Square Enix locked the Plus version of the game in order to make players pay for a PS5 upgrade that would have been free for customers that had paid for the PS4 version of the classic JRPG.

The current-gen version has either a beautiful 4K resolution or a silky 60fps, as well as the lightning loading speeds we have come to expect. The Yuffie Intergrade DLC is an additional expansion that is paid for. In the Christmas spirit, Square Enix is offering up Episode Intermission for a 25 percent discount at around £14.99/$14.99, with the free upgrade coming on Wednesday, December 22nd.

Players are becoming a little infuriated at the lack of messaging around cross-gen games on Plus, though many seem understanding of the fact that publishers want to ensure previous purchasers get value for money. Only recently, for the December additions, Mortal Shell was a PS4 only title with no PS5 upgrade path, whereas GodFall (a PS5 only title) delivered a special Challenger Edition that locked away much of the content. Meanwhile, earlier in the year, Wreckfest offered the PS5 version on Plus with no special requirements and Control Ultimate Edition for PS5 and PS4 was generously given out.

So, Wednesday, grab the Final Fantasy VII Remake and the Yuffie DLC at a discount. What do you think of the news? How would you begin clearing up the messaging? Let us know in the comments!
