Let us breeze past the normal populous of Boring Central Station — Fortnite, Call of Duty, GTA V, and FIFA 22 — in favour of getting into the meat of the top ten. All three of December's PlayStation Plus monthly games have made it into the top ten: Mortal Shell (10), LEGO DC Super-Villians (7), and Godfall: Challenger Edition (6). The triple-combo of PS4 and PS5 games has been mired in discussions of upgrades and knock-off versions this month, with Godfall: Challenger Edition catching much of the flack for gating half of the game. However, that seems to have had little impact as players helped Godfall give Grand Theft Auto a run for its money, which is made even more impressive considering that GTA V is a PS4 game and Godfall is PS5 only. The fun little gem LEGO DC Super-Villians can be chuffed with its performance too, sliding in just behind the former title while laughing maniacally. Rocket League and Apex Legends split the difference between the pair of Plus games and the next entry, Mortal Shell. The SoulsBorne title is just making it into the top ten, but make no mistake — that is impressive for a niche genre title even if it is 'free.'

We have to pay a second of attention to Battlefield 2042 here for slipping from 6th to 12th. The rumblings are that player counts are slipping below even the much-maligned Battlefield V, but it is still rocking numbers above that in our charts. That being said, the drop off from last week is humongous, and we suspect that this isn't going to get any better for a long time yet. This teenage region of places seems to belong to those live-service games that have just slipped off the pace as the PS Plus games have been ushered in, with five- and three-place slips evident in most cases. One big winner is in the mix, though. Marvel's Spider-Man has thwipped up five places into 21st position, making it clear that this is the PlayStation go-to title for the year despite the release of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart sitting at a very poor 79th place.

Grand Theft Auto III — Definitive Edition has clawed into an impressive 30th position after its entry into the PlayStation Now service. That suggests that amongst our tracked users, PlayStation Now actually does have a bit of sway at the lower end of the Gameplay Chart. The most catastrophic result this week is probably Marvel's Avengers in 32nd, which is down 12 places. The Crystal Dynamics game just cannot retain players at all, even with a huge update and Spider-Man being introduced as a playable character. The update has only been out a few days! Our man on the ground, Editor Luke, has more on the game for you in his latest State of Play.
