Embracer Group plans to acquire more studios for 82-developer roster

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,
The Embracer Group is massive, having made 26 development studio acquisitions in just the last year for its major publishing labels: THQ Nordic, Koch Media, and more. The group has no plans to stop, either.

Embracer Group want more

Embracer publically released its second interim report for the 2021 period between July and September, as first picked up by Gematsu. In it, the company acknowledges its present 82 internal studios under eight operative groups — THQ Nordic, Gearbox Entertainment, Koch Media, Saber Interactive, Easybrain, Amplifier Game Invest, Coffee Stain Holding, and DECA Games — with access to 262 IP. That alone would be massive, but the group is already looking into the future:

"We will never force a deal for the sake of making a deal, but rather let it take adequate time," says the report. "In the past 12 months, we have made 37 acquisitions and expect to do a similar amount of transactions over the coming 12 months. We currently have a large range of active processes and dialogues, including a good number of signed exclusive term sheets."

What does this jargon mean? Well, it makes it clear that there are already negotiations for more studios and/or publishers, as well as implying publishing deals for games made by outside studios. The report makes it clear numerous times that all studios are given time and respect by the publisher, something very few interim reports ever bother to mention. The group has plenty coming out in the future, including Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic from Aspyr, ELEX II from THQ Nordic, Tina Tina's Wonderlands from Gearbox, and plenty more.

What do you think of this news? When is an embracing of a studio one too many? Any eyes on games from the studios? Let us know in the comments!
