Blizzard officially renames Overwatch's McCree

By Sean Carey,
Blizzard has renamed one of Overwatch's most popular heroes, the cowboy McCree, in an attempt to distance itself from former designer Jesse McCree, who was named in various accounts surrounding the studio's toxic work culture.

As of October 26th, McCree will be known as Cole Cassidy. Blizzard announced it was changing the character's name back in August "to something better that represents what Overwatch stands for." The cowboy was named after former developer Jesse McCree, who was named as participating in the now-infamous "Cosby Suite" scandal.

"The first thing a renegade loses is their name, and this one gave up his long ago," Blizzard writes on Twitter. "Running from his past meant running from himself, and each passing year only widened the divide between who he had been and what he had become. But in every cowboy's life, there comes a time when he has to stop and make a stand.

"To make this new Overwatch better - to make things right - he had to be honest with his team and himself. The cowboy he was rode into the sunset, and Cole Cassidy faced the world at dawn."

Blizzard previously announced that it would be "more thoughtful and discerning" about adding real world references into the hero shooter in the future.

Just last week, Activision Blizzard said that over 20 employees had "exited" the company, and another 20 had faced "other types of disciplinary action" since the harassment lawsuit was filed against the gaming giant.
