Name’s Scott from Scotland! Gaming is and always has been my primary hobby, but my other two major hobbies are the gym and picking random topics to study that will never be useful IRL. I am also a HUGE lover of stats/numbers… So I find myself right at home on a site like TrueTrophies. Just scratches that itch, y’know?

How did you start gaming and trophy hunting?

I had a controller in my hand from the age of two onwards (copying my Dad) and pushed buttons until they did want I wanted them to! I bought Super Stardust HD and earned a trophy in it the day trophies launched (2nd of July 2008) though I never really started playing Playstation until 2015. Most of my trophy hunting comes from when TT events are on. I got a significant portion of my total TT during Leapfrog 2020 and I love events in general.

Which consoles do you predominantly play at the moment?

PS5, Switch and PC.

Give us a taste of your favourite games!

Castlevania, DrakeNieR, Bioshock, Vermintide, Mahjong, and many an arcade classic!

What is your favourite genre?

Gimme anything arcadey!

Where in the world are you and what is the gaming climate like there?

I’m in Scotland and I honestly am not sure what the gaming climate is like here. Then again, what I do know is I have a close-knit group of around a dozen IRL friends who all have gaming as their main hobby… and online I seem to bump into an awful lot of Scottish gamers considering how low the population is! Maybe it’s our actual climate (wet and windy) that explains that one!

Do you have any controversial hot takes related to gaming?

  • I’ll take a short, linear game over an open-world game that wastes my time with padding/filler any day!
  • I’m not against game companies charging for their games however they please and it being up to us to decide what we play.

Do you have a love for a game that isn’t well-regarded by others?

Gonna have to be boring here and say that most of the games I love are also highly regarded. Some might be a bit niche, but still well regarded by those who have played them. I guess Venetica would be the best candidate here, especially since it’s not my usual type of game and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

What upcoming game are you most excited about?

Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars. I know we don’t know much about it, but we know Yoko Taro is involved and that’s enough to justify a day one purchase from me!

The Trophy Case

What is the hardest trophy you have earned?

Getting the platinum in There Came an Echo. A lot of that game is voice-activated and being Scottish didn’t help matters! Fun and unique game though, I highly recommend it. Otherwise just my trophy case completions.

What is the longest it took for you to earn a trophy?

Almost six months to earn “An Adventurer’s Life” in Final Fantasy XIV. You need to complete 1000 Levequests, but you only receive six allowances per day so it takes a minimum of 167 days.

What is the naughtiest way you have circumvented the hard work to grab a trophy?

No question this award goes to “The Final Chapter” trophy in Friday the 13th. To give a little context on this one: you can’t choose to be Jason in a normal lobby, you just have a chance to be Jason. Given full lobbies and match times this could easily take over 2000 hours… so I went into a private lobby and boosted it. It feels a little dirty… but, in my defence, I did play the game legit for well over 100 hours beforehand! The cherry on top? Matches are stored server-side, so I also got the NA and HK/TW versions and auto-popped the trophies in each version, saving thousands of hours.

What is the easiest full list for the best game?

NieR Automata. You can play on easy where you auto dodge enemy attacks and you can buy any trophies you miss from the in-game trophy shop.

What is the trophy you are most embarrassed to have?

“Scorched Savior” in Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell. Can you believe I actually sat through that until the end? I know I should have some explanation for such a deplorable act… but, I have no words.

What trophy are you embarrassed not to have?

“Congratulations!” in 3D Dot Game Heroes. This was procrastination at its finest. I had done everything in the game that requires any effort. I was missing 2 swords that could be bought with small blocks. Small blocks can be farmed as a drop from an enemy and I reckon a couple of hours grind was all I needed. I procrastinated and then my PS3 yellow lighted, losing the file forever. This was before cloud saving was the norm.

Which lists have you given up on?

Too many to count! I have never been a completionist, so when I get bored with a game I just move on, unless I am super close to being done, or a TT event brings me back.

Best non-trophy related gaming achievement?

In my entire life, my Unreal Tournament performance and raid leading in World of Warcraft. In recent years, my Sanma Mahjong progress and clearing all Vermintide levels on Cataclysm (there is a trophy for all base game levels on Cataclysm, but not including DLC).

What was your favourite trophy list?

Roundabout, because the entire list be meme-ing.

When you first skim a trophy list, what do you look for?

How much is missable.

How should a list be constructed?

In a manner that encourages the player to try out the different modes and ways to experience what the game has to offer, without incentivising unnatural play or grinds that overstay their welcome.

The Community

Any TT community shout-outs?

Not gonna call out any names specifically, but there is a small tight-knit group of site members I speak to and/or play games with regularly. You guys know who you are! Also want to give a quick shout out to all the staff who keep TT going. Big fan of the TT community as a whole!

We would like to thank Scott for taking the time to speak to us and help us reformat the interviews. If you have any other suggestions or would like to have a swing at answering some questions yourself, feel free to let us know in the comments!
