Call of Duty 2022 is reportedly a sequel to Modern Warfare

By Sean Carey,
Call of Duty 2022 will be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, a follow up to 2019's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. That's according to a leak from insider Tom Henderson and subsequent reports corroborating his claim.

CoD Modern Warfare

"It looks like Call of Duty: 2022 is codenamed, Project Cortez." Henderson said in a tweet. "It's expected to be a sequel to Modern Warfare 2019." The codename "Project Cortez" first appeared in the Nvidia GeForce Now datamine from earlier this week, which also lists Infinity Ward as its developer.

A report from VGC backs up Henderson's claim. The outlet has spoken to sources with knowledge of Activision's plans and says the sequel's campaign will revolve around US special forces fighting against Colombian drug cartels. A further report from Eurogamer also backed up VGC's finding, saying Project Cortez is "apparently a reference to the Colonel Felix Cortez character from 1994 action thriller Clear and Present Danger."

The next entry into the CoD series is Call of Duty: Vanguard, which is being developed by Sledgehammer Games and launches on November 5th.
