PS5 system software update goes live tomorrow with expanded storage and updated trophies

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,
The PlayStation Blog confirmed that the PS5 system update which has long been in beta will go public tomorrow. The update features expanded storage options, updates to trophy lists, 3D audio on TV speakers, and more.

There are eight major features listed in both the video and the blog post, though the blog post has more details. The first is the Control Centre customisation that will allow you to clear the clutter away from the quick menu. Some slight tweaks have come to Game Base, too. You can message friends easily from the Control Centre, as well as easily see what friends are online and offline. There are now clearer indications of which generation of the game you are playing, with two separate tiles on the home screen and in the game library for each version installed. There is now a screen reader function, to access you can access by "press PS + Triangle buttons."

For PlayStation Now users, you can select what resolution is being streamed — 720p or 1080p — to increase the playability of the game in low internet speed areas. There will now be test stream for troubleshooting, thank the lord Sackboy above. In the least used new functions for PS5, there is a new accolade called "Leader" that will be awardable to other players after playing certain titles that support the feature. There will be auto captured videos made of your speed run times in games that track such matters, like Astro's Playroom and Sackboy: A Big Adventure.

The business end of this, then. You can now track up to five trophies like in the menu above, which is very useful indeed. There has likely also been a shadow update to trophy lists making them vertical (like they should have been in the first place), though it must be noted that the beta had ordered the information in a really strange way. We are yet to see if Sony has reordered information based on that feedback.

There is also 3D audio for two-channel TV speakers, allowing to scan the acoustics of your room using your DualSense to get the best atmosphere. We would suggest you read the blog post for further details, alongside the installation in formation for expanded SSD support that will be added in the update.

Is it an update that adds important features, but are they the ones you wanted? The fact that there are still no folders is killing us. But, let us know your thoughts in the comments!
