The PlayStation 5 has sold big in Japan with over 1 million units sold in 43 weeks, far outpacing the time taken for PS4 to sell the same amount of units. The disk-drive unity has outsold the digital edition nearly 8/1.

ps5 console sells big numbers japan

The news comes by way of Famitsu with numbers from Sony Interactive Entertainment, which we found thorough Gematsu. Famitsu is a notoriously reliable source, especially considering the numbers have been released, in part, by SIE this time around. The exact numbers are pretty staggering, with Sony's estimated "cumulative sales in Japan" standing at 1,012,656 units, with the disk-drive PS5 selling 847,421 units and the Digital Edition selling 165,235 units. That is over a 43 week period since launch, outpacing the PS4 by just over two months.

A little surprisingly, Famitsu's research has shown that Resident Evil Village sold the most units of all games in Japan since its release on May 8th, with an estimated 67,000 units sold. The institutes that have performed the research believe that this is, in part, because the most anticipated games, like Final Fantasy XVI, are yet to be released. If anything, that makes the number of PS5s sold more impressive considering that there are no big hitters in the Japanese market yet.
