New lighter PS5 model appears on shelves

A PS5 hardware revision that shed 300g and revised the screw has been long rumoured and was essentially confirmed when official documentation was published by Sony. Now, a new model has hit shelves in Australia and the UK according to numerous sources.

ps5 console revision

Press Start managed to find a version of the console in Australia and Eurogamer found it in the UK, both models with the 3.2kg lighter weight and revised screw. However, the version found was not the digital edition with these revisions, version CFI-1100B, but a disk-drive model called CFI-1102A.

In short, these new codes indicate which version of the PS5 you are picking up. PushSquare and VGC note that CFI-1XXX indicates the launch hardware, while the new code with the extra 1 is the newer version. Fun!

What does this mean, then? Well, lighter weights probably make the hardware cheaper to produce (with fewer materials) and ship. Obviously, with one console the price differential would be minuscule, but with the estimated millions sold before a Slim PS5 model come out, that's a lot of money saved. As for the PS5 base screw? Well, it can be twisted without a screwdriver, but we are hoping for something more exciting. Maybe it has a different flavour profile? The last one was too metallic for my tongue.

Let us know if you have your hands on a PS5! If you don't, what is your plan for getting one? See you in the comments!
