EA announces Dead Space remake for PS5 with teaser trailer

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,
EA has finally announced the long-rumoured remake of Dead Space at EA Play Live 2021, and it will be next-gen and PC exclusive.

EA Motive is taking lead on development using EA's famed Frostbite engine. Though the teaser doesn't show all that much, it doesn't give us a sneak peek at a game that is being completely rebuilt for next-gen hardware. Additionally, there will be an improved story, characters, gameplay mechanics, and more. Prepare your limbs for a horrific and brutal adventure through the (really, really) scary USG Ishimura as engineer Isaac Clarke. The game currently has no release date.

Over on IGN, Roman Campos-Oriola — EA Motive's creative director — said that the game was looking to do more than a traditional remaster job. "In terms of visuals, sound, gameplay, everything, we are rebuilding all of these assets. We are not porting them, it's not uprezzing the texture or adding more polygons to the model. It's really rebuilding all these elements, shooting all the animations, et cetera."

In addition, senior producer Philippe Ducharme revealed that the game will be without microtransactions, with EA apparently having learned from past money-making endeavours. "We're looking at what can be taken and reinjected into the first game from a future standpoint," said Ducharme. "We're also learning from mistakes such as microtransactions, which we will not have, for instance, in our game." Dead Space 3 had a fair amount of microtransactions, though we here at TT feel as though the team should hardly be applauded for the lack of them in a single-player story-based game.
