PS5 is "comfortably the market leader" in UK console sales

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,
The PS5 is apparently the best-selling console in the UK by a large margin, according to GamesIndustry.biz chief Christopher Dring.

Despite supply constraints, it appears that the PS5 is a "comfortable" market leader in the UK for hardware sales in 2021. Dring often posts UK-based facts about the gaming market, but obviously, make sure you are on guard as this statement has not been confirmed with any hard data. A particularly interesting note is that Xbox Series X|S is implied to be catching with the Nintendo Switch, which might mean that the Microsoft console is beginning to roll with a little momentum after a solid year of acquisitions and PR.

Obviously, the UK and the rest of the world are supply-constrained. There are chip shortages and shipping issues all over the place, so it would be a curious case to have seen how well the next-gen systems could have done if they were unleashed from those tethers. Sony appears to be planning to start supplying consoles through PlayStation Direct in the future to deter those dastardly scalpers, and so it can try to sell a record number of consoles.

Is this a good sign for PlayStation? Or is the hardware just the first part of a long game? Let us know in the comments.
