Insomniac hiring for new multiplayer game

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,
PlayStation seems intent on releasing new multiplayer games, and now Insomniac is also on the case according to several job listings.

A few weeks ago, the head of first-party at PlayStation, Hermen Hulst, stated "who says that multiplayer experience cannot have great stories, right?" It now seems that Insomniac is also on the bandwagon and developing a multiplayer game. The job listings request not only a multiplayer system designer but also a creative lead and a story designer. This would suggest a story-driven multiplayer experience if the open posts are all for the same project. However, Insomniac is a massive team split into the Burbank, California division (Miles Morales) and a North Carolina branch (Rift Apart). With the last Insomniac game having released just two weeks ago, this project is probably years out, so you can just forget about seeing anything soon.

It is important to note that over the last few months, we have had rumours and acknowledgement of four multiplayer exclusives: Guerrilla games hired the director of Rainbow Six: Siege, Naughty Dog is nearing the end of the stand-alone Last of Us: Factions, and the new partners — Firewalk and Deviation — are both independently working on something multiplayer-focused with PlayStation. With this many multiplayer games on the horizon, we here at TT wonder if these games will start to have to start competing for playtime amongst the first-party lineup, let alone all the other multiplayer behemoths out there. Ultimately, though, we are still excited!

Insomniac has just released Rift Apart, a game that Editor Luke called "the game your PS5 was born to play" in his review. What do you think of this news? You must be excited, right? Or nah, this is the death of the glory year and doom to all? Let us know what you think in the comments, I'll try and get involved since I love first-party news and can't stop chatting about it.
