PlayStation first-party boss talks about new game with Devotion

The head of PlayStation first-party, Hermen Hulst, has been doing the rounds with Devotion — Sony's new independent partner studio.

For a bit of context before we go further, Deviation is an independent studio of more than 100 members and run by former Call of Duty: Black Ops project leads Dave Anthony and Jason Blundell. Devotion is apparently independently financed and entirely culturally unique from in-house Sony. The partnership allows them to (probably) gain an engine and the knowledge to work within that from XDEV, along with access to the incredible first-party creative teams for help. You can read more about this in our breakdown of a separate interview where we got a deep look at how PlayStation Studios is operating to compete with Microsoft's expensive acquisitions.

In the Eurogamer piece, Hulst and Deviation have now opened up on their project. "Together we're bringing a new IP that's bold, that stands on the shoulders of what [the Deviation team] have learned over their careers that speak for themselves. And that is inevitably going to lead to a new addition in the PlayStation portfolio that I'm really looking forward to sharing with you in more detail," said Hulst. "New IP is amazing. We're always looking to offer fresh new experiences to the audience, to the PlayStation community." An educated guess suggests that the game will be a multiplayer shooter: the genre is absent from the first-party lineup and the team are managed by former multiplayer developers.

Though a question was posed about whether the game will be cross-gen or coming to PC, the answer was less clear. "It's way too early to go into specific platforms at this stage, but it is going to be a console exclusive," said Anthony. We expect that it will mostly depend upon the console-availability situation at hand in a few years time.

Thoughts on the potential of a new multiplayer shooter IP? Is this something you actually want or are you content with the current first-party slate? Let us know and one of us will be sure to get involved in the conversation!

Hey, I'm Kes! I'm a Staff Writer, and I've been here since 2021. What do I like? The Outer Wilds is top notch. The Witcher 3 blew my mind over the course of five years completing it. I want Burnout back — I really miss crunching mechanical wonders into walls to the sound of Guns N' Roses. Cool, now we are acquainted, I'll see you around.
