Head of PlayStation wants to move "beyond the boundaries" of console gaming

Jim Ryan, the head of PlayStation, has given an interview to Axios in which he said that the brand must move "beyond the boundaries" of traditional gaming platforms.

The Last of Us Remastered

Jim Ryan (known as Sir Business in these parts) initially establishes the current position of PlayStation. “We are an entertainment company with a community of more than 100 million gamers with really extraordinary levels of commitment and engagement [...] I would say unequivocally that we are competing for leisure hours, and that any definition of competition has to extend way beyond the boundaries of what has traditionally been defined as gaming.” With PlayStation making big moves into TV and film with Neil Druckmann's The Last of Us on HBO and a Ghost of Tsushima movie, it is clear that Sir Business is angling for new pastures for the PlayStation brand. Last month, a PlayStation conference meeting suggested that it was prepared to use any means necessary to create loyalty to the brand.

The move to mobile is a huge part of this push. “The thinking here is that our IP portfolio is in such a strong state right now, it seems perverse to restrict enjoyment of it to our existing PlayStation community. [...] We are working on a number of models to open up mobile. You’ll see the first fruits of this sooner than you might think," said Sir Business. Again, this is another area already highlighted by the company through conference notes.

Clearly, PlayStation under the rule of Sir Business has an intent to begin the expansion into different territories of gaming as soon as possible! What do you think of the news? Thrilled or not so much? There is more to come from the article so stay tuned!
