The free Outriders demo arrives next week and lets you try all four character classes

By Heidi Nicholas,
People Can Fly's third-person shooter Outriders gets a free demo next week on February 25th which includes the game's prologue and opening chapter as well as the option to try all four character classes.

The demo will be available on PS4 and PS5 and will have a minimum download size of 22GB. It goes live on February 25th at 17:00 GMT/12:00 EST/09:00 PST and won't include trophies, although the devs say your "in-game accolades will transfer" along with the rest of your progress if you buy the main game. Crossplay will be available, although it will be in "beta form" so the devs say you'll need to enable it manually. There's no time limit for the demo and it should stay live even after the main game launches.

As for what you'll actually be up to, the demo includes the game's prologue and opening chapter, meaning any equipment and enemies will be "the early game variants." The devs say that "the further you get in the full Outriders story, the more twisted, exotic, and powerful both gear and enemies will become." The demo will feature six character slots, so you can try out all four classes — Pyromancer, Trickster, Devastator, and Technomancer — without needing to delete your character. The demo takes you up until a boss fight against an Altered called Gauss, but more side missions will be available afterwards "so you will be able to go back and explore the world." You'll be capped at character level 7 but you can earn a fourth ability as well as two skill points to use in the skill tree. You can make your way up until World Tier 5 — World Tiers being the game's overall "dynamic difficulty system" — meaning your "chance for higher rarity gear is increased, but the drop chance for Legendary Gear is still extremely low." You'll also have access to a certain amount of resources for use in crafting and trading, although the crafting system doesn't unlock until you're past the demo, so you might need to save some of your resources.

Outriders is set on the planet Epoch, which humanity came to as a last resort to get away from their dying planet. Their attempt at colonisation failed and after coming into contact with an anomaly on Epoch, the Outriders were put into cryosleep for 30 years, only to wake up to an entirely different world in which they now had supernatural powers. Pyromancers are armed with fiery abilities, the assassin-style Tricksters can, according to the devs, "manipulate the fabric of time and space," while Devastators power through with brute force, and Technomancers wield gadgets. Epoch is already populated with a range of hyper-evolved creatures and other humanoids which you'll need to use your new abilities against.

The Outriders demo launches next week on February 25th, with the full game launching on April 1st.

Hey, I'm Heidi! I've just finished studying a Masters in English Literature, but I've been obsessed with gaming since long before then. I began on the PS2 with Spyro, before graduating to the Xbox 360 and disappearing into Skyrim. I'm now a loyal RPG fan, but I still like to explore other genres — when I'm not playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, or being lured back into Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Witcher 3!
