No Man's Sky has a free Companions update available now

By Heidi Nicholas,
Companions is the first major update for No Man's Sky in 2021. It's available now and free to all players, and lets you adopt creature companions to take with you on your travels.

Companions expands on the mechanics of 2018's Beyond update, which introduced new creature interactions like feeding and riding. In Companions, you can adopt creatures, train them to hunt for resources, have them dig for treasure or mine, and more. Creature companions can also lay eggs, which can be genetically modified in the Egg Sequencer to create rarer species.

Companions can also be customised with accessories and traded with other players and, depending on their personalities, will have different reactions to other travellers. Their personality will continue to evolve as they travel around with you, and you'll be able to hear their "innermost thoughts" through the Exosuit. Along with foraging for resources and treasure, Companions can also notify you of hazards. In return, you can feed and pet them. The Companions update is available now, and is free to all players.

Hey, I'm Heidi! I've just finished studying a Masters in English Literature, but I've been obsessed with gaming since long before then. I began on the PS2 with Spyro, before graduating to the Xbox 360 and disappearing into Skyrim. I'm now a loyal RPG fan, but I still like to explore other genres — when I'm not playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, or being lured back into Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Witcher 3!
