Ratchet & Clank devs say Rift Apart's "weapon experience is shaping up to be incredible"

By Heidi Nicholas,
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is one of the PS5's biggest upcoming games. The last we heard, from a PS5 advert, was that Rift Apart is expected to launch in the first half of this year. We still don't have a concrete release date, but a recent Insomniac interview gives us a little more info about how the game benefits from the capabilities of the PS5 and DualSense controller.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

The Ratchet & Clank games are well known for their excellent, and usually ridiculous, weapons. We've already seen a few that will be coming with Rift Apart, including the Burst Pistol, Shatterbomb, the Topiary Sprinkler, and The Enforcer. Speaking to GamesRadar, Marcus Smith, the creative director at Insomniac, and Mike Daly, the game director, talked about how the game's weapons benefit from the PS5 controller. "Weapons are always at the forefront of the Ratchet experience," Daly said, "and the DualSense gives us powerful new tools to take each weapon's unique personality even further. We combine haptics with the controller speaker to make the physical aspect of firing a weapon feel distinctly textured and believable." Daly adds that the controller's adaptive triggers also allow for "extra functionality... partially pulling the trigger or feathering it gives us a way to add nuance to weapon functions that just weren't possible before as the trigger itself couldn't give feedback."

We don't yet have a firm release date for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, but we'll update you as soon as we hear more. In the meantime, you can check out what we know so far over on the Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart hub.

Hey, I'm Heidi! I've just finished studying a Masters in English Literature, but I've been obsessed with gaming since long before then. I began on the PS2 with Spyro, before graduating to the Xbox 360 and disappearing into Skyrim. I'm now a loyal RPG fan, but I still like to explore other genres — when I'm not playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, or being lured back into Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Witcher 3!
