PS5 UK scalper group claims it's purchased 3,500 consoles

If you've been having trouble getting your hands on a PS5 in the UK, scalper groups are partly to blame for the massive stock shortage. One of these groups has claimed it's managed to purchase around 3,500 PS5 consoles to resell using bots.

Business Insider reports that a UK-based Discord group called CrepChiefNotify, claims to have acquired around 3,500 PS5s using bots. The group uses these sophisticated bots to automatically jump to the front of virtual queues to buy consoles from legitimate retailers. "Our total collective number is 2,472 PS5 consoles across all of our members," a group manager said. CrepChiefNotify also claims to have nabbed "just under 1,000" PS5 preorders from back in September.

The Discord group is made up of 12 staffers and charges users a subscription fee starting at £29.99 and going up to £399.99. After paying, members get access to services that helps them purchase items such as PS5s before selling them on for a profit on sites like eBay.

These bots aren't anything new. Scalpers have been using similar tech to purchase in-demand clothing and sneakers from brands as soon as they become available to sell on for profit. However, due to the lockdown in the UK, consumer interests have changed, and the scalpers have shifted their focus too. "During the first COVID-19 lockdown, we noticed a huge shift in products that people were buying," the manager said. "The focus shifted towards the most ridiculous things, like outdoor hot tubs. We noticed that these began selling out in stores and reselling on eBay for a profit. So our developer wrote some site monitor software, and we tracked the stock of the sites selling hot tubs! Every time they pinged into stock, we would notify our members to buy it all." Naturally, due to the demand for the PS5, developers are now creating bots to track and instantly purchase Sony's console faster than any human could.

With groups like this operating in dark corners of the internet, it's not really a surprise that many people are finding it hard to pick up a PS5. It's unclear when more stock will be coming into the country too. Sony boss Jim Ryan recently said that all PS5 stock has been sold, and the company is trying to increase supply.
