Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales & Horizon Forbidden West will also launch for PS4

By Heidi Nicholas,
Among all the other announcements of yesterday's PS5 showcase, along with God of War: Ragnarok and Hogwarts Legacy, Sony also announced PS4 versions for a few of its PS5 exclusives. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, and Horizon Forbidden West will all be launching for the PS4 as well as for the PS5, and will include a free next-gen upgrade.

Horizon Forbidden West

Over on the PlayStation Blog, Sony adds, "we know that the PS4 community will transition to PS5 at different times... Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Sackboy A Big Adventure, and Horizon Forbidden West will also launch on PS4. While these three games were designed to take advantage of PS5 and its unique next-gen features like the ultra-high-speed SSD and DualSense controller, PS4 owners will also be able to enjoy these experiences when they launch." The PlayStation team also clarifies that "the PS4 digital versions of launch games include a free upgrade on both PS5 consoles, while the PS4 disc versions of these games include a free upgrade on the PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-Ray disc drive."

Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales in particular had a lot of new announcements and details shown during the PS5 showcase. James Stevenson, community director for Insomniac Games, explained in a further PlayStation Blog post that the game "also supports a next-gen upgrade path, so even if you aren’t ready to upgrade to PS5 just yet, there’s nothing stopping you from buying the PS4 version and enjoying the game alongside everyone else at launch. While it doesn’t have the enhancements made possible by the console in the PS5 version, the game still looks beautiful on PS4 and PS4 Pro, and you can rest easy that when you do make the jump to PS5, the game comes with you."

Stevenson also confirmed that the PS5 Ultimate Edition of the game includes a voucher code for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered: "you’ll be able to experience the complete storyline up to this point, which includes the remaster of the original game and all three instalments of the Marvel’s Spider-Man: The City That Never Sleeps DLC so you can play the full narrative arc."

Stevenson adds that "the remaster for the PS5 is no simple up-res, as many of the game’s art assets have been completely updated to take advantage of the PS5 console’s horsepower. You’ll see better-looking characters with improved skin, eyes, hair, and facial animation (including our new, next-generation Peter Parker). You’ll also see ray-traced reflections and ambient shadows, improved lighting, more pedestrians and vehicles stretching further into the distance, and the same optional performance mode offered on Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, allowing you to finally play the game at a targeted 60fps frame rate." Along with all that, there's also "near-instant loading, 3D audio, and the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback." Peter will also get three new suits. The remastered Marvel's Spider-Man will also have new photo mode features and even a whole new stack of trophies "for those of you looking to Platinum the game all over again." Lastly, we also had confirmation that Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be a launch title.

The blog added that the team has been "working hard all year to ensure that PS5 will launch with Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales as well as Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered," and that they "have big plans for the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe with our partners at PlayStation and Marvel."

Hey, I'm Heidi! I've just finished studying a Masters in English Literature, but I've been obsessed with gaming since long before then. I began on the PS2 with Spyro, before graduating to the Xbox 360 and disappearing into Skyrim. I'm now a loyal RPG fan, but I still like to explore other genres — when I'm not playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, or being lured back into Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Witcher 3!
