Final Fantasy XVI announced as a PS5 console exclusive

By Luke Albigés,
Final Fantasy XVI will be coming to PlayStation 5, as confirmed by its grand reveal during today's PS5 Showcase event. It will also be a console exclusive, with PC as the only other platform. Check out the first trailer here.

The game looks similar in visual style to FFXIV: A Realm Reborn, which lines up with the rumours that suggested the same team that successfully turned around the fortunes of the failing original version of XIV would be taking the reins on this project. It does, of course, look a whole lot better than the MMO, on account of running on hardware several generations stronger than when it first arrived on console. Interestingly, summons such as Ifrit, Shiva, Phoenix, and Titan all seen in the trailer are refered to as 'Eikons' — the same name used in A Realm Reborn, and there's also a ton of other familiar classes, monsters, themes, and more. It's also noticably more 'mature' than previous games, as evidenced by one particularly bloody scene.

Gameplay-wise, it looks like Final Fantasy XVI will pick up where XV and VII Remake left off, with its protagonist leaping, dashing, and teleporting around much like Noctis in action-based combat. We'd take an educated guess that the hero's arsenal is based on the power of the Eikons — in addition to a few traditional weapons used, we also see him summon a great sword resembling the wings of Phoenix, a set of craggy fists akin to those of Titan, and a set of speedy talons that look like they could quite easily belong to Garuda. Between this and the trailer also showing a child manifesting the power of Phoenix, it seems likely that summoners are once again front-and-centre in the narrative.

Square's evergreen RPG series has been a PlayStation mainstay ever since Final Fantasy VII propelled the series onto the global stage on the original PlayStation. Between that and many other previous releases being revealed at Sony events or exclusive to Sony consoles, it wasn't overly surprising to see the latest in the long line of FF titles hit the Sony stream this evening. That said, it was surprising to see it at all, since just like getting a FFVII remake announcement back at E3 2015 (along with The Last Guardian, Horizon, and Shenmue III... what a ridiculous showing), it's the kind of reveal you can never go into these showcases expecting or you're always going to come away disappointed. Not today, though!

Square hasn't announced a date for Final Fantasy XVI yet, but it's probably safe to assume it's still a fair way off. Either way, it's one more reason to pick up a PS5, and we're not going to argue with that.
