Updated: Reports claim Sony has cut PS5 production by 4 million units

Update: Sony has released a statement via GIBiz: “While we do not release details related to manufacturing, the information provided by Bloomberg is false... We have not changed the production number for PlayStation 5 since the start of mass production."

Original story: New reports claim that Sony has cut PS5 production by 4 million units after experiencing production problems with a core component of the console.

PS5

These reports come from Bloomberg, which also claims that Sony initially "boosted orders" in line with its expectation for a high demand for the PS5 but ran into manufacturing issues "such as production yields as low as 50% for its SOC" (system-on-chip.) Bloomberg's sources told the site that the company isn't able to produce as many consoles as planned, and that yields are improving but not yet stable.

We haven't yet had the final details for Sony's next-gen console, such as price, date, and pre-order info. Microsoft has just announced prices and release dates for both the Xbox Series X and the Xbox Series S, both of which launch in November. That Holiday 2020 period is drawing closer, and since November looks like a good month for next-gen happenings, we should hopefully hear some PS5 news soon. There is a PS5 showcase tomorrow, September 16th. The event will only be around 40 minutes, but it's showcasing updates from PS5 games, so a reveal of the PS5's release date and price would be a great way to finish off the stream. What do you think? What are you hoping to see tomorrow? Let us know in the comments!

Hey, I'm Heidi! I've just finished studying a Masters in English Literature, but I've been obsessed with gaming since long before then. I began on the PS2 with Spyro, before graduating to the Xbox 360 and disappearing into Skyrim. I'm now a loyal RPG fan, but I still like to explore other genres — when I'm not playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, or being lured back into Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Witcher 3!
