Ubisoft claims PS5 isn't backwards compatible with PS3, PS2 or PS1 titles

By Sean Carey,
According to a now-deleted Ubisoft support post, the PS5 will only be backwards compatible with supported PS4 games and not titles from older generations.

The post on Ubisoft's support website previously read, "Backwards compatibility will be available for supported PlayStation 4 titles, but will not be possible for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, or PlayStation games." This has since been changed, and the sentence about backwards compatibility has now been deleted. Luckily, Twitter user Nibel nabbed a screenshot of the post before it was taken down.

Sony previously said that the "overwhelming majority of the 4000+ PS4 titles will be playable on PS5," but hasn't mentioned anything regarding PS3, PS2 and PS1 games. During the PS5 specs reveal, Mark Cerny announced that the top 100 PS4 games would be available to play on the next-gen console at launch. Other than those two statements, we still don't know much about the PS5s backwards compatibility, especially in regards to older-gen games.

This will come as somewhat of a blow to those hoping to play games from older generations on their PS5's. Microsoft has taken a completely different approach with how it handles backwards compatibility for the Xbox Series X. Microsoft's console will support thousands of games at launch including Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles.

We have contacted Sony for comment and will update you if we hear anything back.
