The Last of Us HBO series will be the "first of many shows" from PlayStation Productions

By Heidi Nicholas,
The hugely popular PlayStation exclusive, The Last of Us, is now to be made into an HBO TV series, with Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann collaborating on the project with the creator of HBO's Chernobyl.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series will feature the events of the first game, with the possibilty of expanding into content themed on The Last of Us Part II, which releases later this year on the 29th of May.

Chris Parnell, co-president of Sony Pictures Television Studios, is reported to have said that "this is the first of many shows we intend to develop with our friends at PlayStation Productions". He goes on to add that "The Last of Us is a brilliant achievement in storytelling and character development, and we are lucky to have the opportunity to work with this team to adapt it."

The show will be in good hands, since Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann — the writer and creative director of both The Last of Us games — is collaborating on the project with Craig Mazin, who created HBO's Chernobyl. Both have nothing but praise for the other: "Neil Druckmann is without question the finest storyteller working in the video game medium, and The Last of Us is his magnum opus," said Mazin. "Getting a chance to adapt this breathtaking work of art has been a dream of mine for years, and I'm so honored to do it in partnership with Neil." Druckmann has also shared his enthusiasm for the project: "From the first time I sat down to talk with Craig I was equally blown away by his approach to narrative and his love and deep understanding of The Last of Us... With Chernobyl, Craig and HBO created a tense, harrowing, emotional masterpiece. I couldn't think of better partners to bring the story of The Last of Us to life as a television show."

It could be a while before we have more details, since Naughty Dog's biggest focus at the moment must be their The Last of Us sequel, which still has a few months to go until it releases on May 29th. We'll let you know when we hear more.

Hey, I'm Heidi! I've just finished studying a Masters in English Literature, but I've been obsessed with gaming since long before then. I began on the PS2 with Spyro, before graduating to the Xbox 360 and disappearing into Skyrim. I'm now a loyal RPG fan, but I still like to explore other genres — when I'm not playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, or being lured back into Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Witcher 3!
