Players will be trying out an hour-long demo for The Last of Us Part II at PAX East

By Heidi Nicholas,
There's only — as developer Naughty Dog points out — 108 days to go until The Last of Us Part II releases on May 29th. The devs have confirmed that the game is in the final stages of production, and that players will be able to get hands-on with an hour-long demo at PAX East later this month.

Dynamic theme

PAX East 2020 is running from February 27th until March 1st, and everyone attending will have the chance to play an hour-long early portion of the game called "Patrol". It looks as though it's part of what's been shown in recent trailers — where Ellie and Dina go out of Jackson to eradicate the infected. Naughty Dog say there'll be new appointments made available every day of PAX East but that space is limited, and recommend using the Experience PlayStation mobile app to book one. They're also bringing back the Ellie Edition of the game, and there'll be a limited number available to pre-order from this Thursday, February 13th at 6:00am PST, for $229.99 USD / $299.99 CAD MSRP. The Ellie Edition has everything from the Collector's Edition, but it's also the only version that includes a full-sized, usable version of Ellie's backpack, along with an embroidered patch and a 7" vinyl of the soundtrack.

Ellie Edition

Speaking of PS4 themes: Naughty Dog are also today releasing a new dynamic theme that will change from day to night depending on the time of your PS4's system clock. It's available for free on the PlayStation store. Along with that, they've released two pieces of The Last of Us Part II art, focusing on Ellie's journey. One shows Ellie playing the guitar under a tree in the forest, and is meant to reflect the semblance of peace she has at the game's beginning. One shows her clutching a machete and hiding from pursuers behind a tree in a similar forest. This one is meant to show the "relentless pursuit of vengeance that follows". These are available as wallpapers from the PlayStation site. Naughty Dog have also provided codes for the dynamic theme.

  • Americas: 4FMP-BBNM-J5L3
  • Europe/AU/NZ/Russia/Middle East/Africa/India: 9DEK-PKNG-N445
  • Japan and Asia: Naughty Dog say to check each country’s official PlayStation social channel for more information on how to get the theme.
There's also a new 8" "Ellie with Machete" statuette available to order for $99.99. It's a collaboration between Dark Horse, who Naughty Dog teamed up with for the 12" Outbreak Day Ellie statue, and the game's character artists. There's only a limited number available, and they can only be ordered before March 13th, although Dark Horse will also be releasing an 8" PVC version of the "Ellie with Bow" statue later this summer. Lastly, Naughty Dog have also got a set of new concept art pieces for the game, which can be purchased as "museum-grade-quality giclee art prints", each one individually packaged, numbered, and provided with a certificate of authenticity. As Naughty Dog said, there's only a few months to go until The Last of Us Part II releases on May 29th, so it's likely we'll hear more details soon — especially since players will be trying out the demo later this month. We'll keep you posted.

Hey, I'm Heidi! I've just finished studying a Masters in English Literature, but I've been obsessed with gaming since long before then. I began on the PS2 with Spyro, before graduating to the Xbox 360 and disappearing into Skyrim. I'm now a loyal RPG fan, but I still like to explore other genres — when I'm not playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, or being lured back into Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Witcher 3!
