Sony President & CEO Announces a Series of Celebrations

By Heidi Nicholas,
Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony International Entertainment, shared a message on the PlayStation Blog to celebrate the fact that this week — specifically tomorrow, December 3rd — commemorates PlayStation's 25th anniversary. He also mentions a week of celebrations on the PS Blog and all of their social channels.

It's tomorrow, December 3rd which officially marks 25 years since the first PlayStation debuted in Japan, before the console released across the world the year after. "Starting from a humble beginning as an upstart within Sony, Ken Kutaragi and team delivered on a vision to elevate video games as a form of entertainment that everyone could enjoy, and to make a platform for game developers to express their creativity", says Ryan. He also notes that the PlayStation sold 100,000 units in Japan on its first day alone, before becoming the first console to surpass 100 million units around the world.

"We struck a chord with the gaming community because PlayStation offered experiences beyond what anyone could ever imagine was possible with a home console. From the very start, we opened our arms to developers, providing them with the tools and technology to create beautiful, expansive worlds, and to experiment with new ideas. That approach led to the diversity of games PlayStation is known for, a true hallmark for our brand across multiple generations of hardware platforms." Ryan continues, saying that over the last 25 years, PlayStation has "stood at the forefront as gaming". PlayStation has had some incomparable exclusives; God of War, The Last of Us, and Horizon Zero Dawn are all regularly quoted as some of the best PlayStation games there are, let alone as just the best exclusives of the PS3 and PS4.

"Supported by passionate fans all around the world, our business has grown significantly and our focus on community is more important than ever", says Ryan. "It’s truly humbling to see fans who grew up on PlayStation passing down their love of gaming to their children, who are now playing on PS4. On behalf of all of us at PlayStation – thank you for taking this journey with us. We can’t wait to celebrate what comes next with you!" Speaking of what's coming next — it's almost the end of the generation. The PS4 and the Xbox One are winding down towards their end of life period, ready for the introduction of the PS5 and Project Scarlett at the end of next year, and the gaming world is turning its attention to what we can hope for from the new generation. But in the meantime, Ryan has promised a week of celebrations across the PS Blog and social channels. Some fans responded hopefully to PlayStation's tweet, asking if it could mean a new theme, like there was for the 20th anniversary. We're not sure yet what the celebrations will consist of; whether it'll be a new theme or sale, or just a nostalgic look back over PlayStation's history, but we'll keep you posted.

Hey, I'm Heidi! I've just finished studying a Masters in English Literature, but I've been obsessed with gaming since long before then. I began on the PS2 with Spyro, before graduating to the Xbox 360 and disappearing into Skyrim. I'm now a loyal RPG fan, but I still like to explore other genres — when I'm not playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, or being lured back into Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Witcher 3!
