Borderlands 3 is Free to Play Now

By Heidi Nicholas,
If you're yet to try Borderlands and felt a little left out with all the hype for Borderlands 3 this year, good news: Gearbox are making it free to play, so you can try it out for yourself without spending. Borderlands 3 is free to try out now, and this free trial will be available until November 24th. Gearbox also say that your progress can carry over with you if you decide to purchase the full game, meaning you don't have to worry about getting stuck in for four days and then starting again.

Gearbox picked a good time for this free trial. They recently unveiled the first campaign DLC for Borderlands 3: Moxxi's Heist of the Handsome Jackpot. Gearbox Studio Head Randy Pitchford discussed the DLC in the third episode of the Borderlands Show, saying that Moxxi and Jack have a history. They were once married, and the Handsome Jack's casino was built using plans which he stole from Moxxi. Now, she's recruiting for a gang to go to to Jack's casino, which is onboard a cruiseship in space, infiltrate it, and get back at him by looting it to the ground. The DLC is full of Hyperion security forces and the crazed inhabitants left over in Jack's casino, plus new enemies and bosses. On the flipside, there's new loot to be had for defeating these new enemies, and the best of it is to be found in the vault of The Handsome Jackpot casino: Eridium, cash, and brand-new Legendary loot: weapons, gear, Vault Hunter Heads and skins, Weapon Trinkets, an ECHO Device Skin, and new Emotes.

Handsome Jack is dead, so you'd figure he wouldn't really be in this DLC, but the developers say he'll be back in some shape or form, and that you'll learn more about him and Moxxi. In the teasers for the DLC, statues and holograms were shown of Handsome Jack, implying that it's more than possible to have some form of the character around, and given his history with Moxxi, it would make sense for him to appear as an antagonist and obstacle to the heist. The DLC is apparently around seven hours and can be treated as endgame campaign content, or you can go straight into a new playthrough and treat it as a (lengthy) side quest after starting anew. All you'll need to have done to access The Handsome Jackpot is have played enough of Borderlands 3's story to have access to Sanctuary III.

Pitchford also talked about how important the lore and overall world of Borderlands was when designing Borderlands 3. The DLC, Moxxi's Heist of the Handsome Jackpot, gave them a chance to goof off in the Borderlands world without having to worry about overarching plot and world lore. Moxxi's heist comes out on December 19th, and is included in both the Season Pass and the Super Deluxe Edition of Borderlands 3. They're both pretty pricey options, with the Season Pass alone going at $49.99 and the Super Deluxe Edition at $79.99, but not to worry; if you've been considering jumping into the Borderlands franchise, this weekend's free trial gives you about four days of trying it out for free, so you can have a go before deciding whether or not to spend. If you've been debating whether or not to pick it up, this free weekend is the perfect time to find out.

Hey, I'm Heidi! I've just finished studying a Masters in English Literature, but I've been obsessed with gaming since long before then. I began on the PS2 with Spyro, before graduating to the Xbox 360 and disappearing into Skyrim. I'm now a loyal RPG fan, but I still like to explore other genres — when I'm not playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, or being lured back into Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Witcher 3!
