RPG fans should keep an eye on Spider's upcoming game Greedfall, set to release in September this year.
Today, Spiders released second episode of their webseries about the game, named 'Forging an Adventure'.
If you haven't heard much about Greedfall yet, the official site explains that the game world and 'its visual identity draw heavily from 17th century Europe' because this was a period 'dominated by exploration, scientific discoveries, and booming culture in general'. Exploration is very much at the heart of the game-- the character is leaving behind the 'polluted' and 'overpopulated' continent of the Old World, which is beset by a mysterious and incurable disease, to explore the newly discovered island of Teer Fradee, which could possibly hold the answers to how to cure the Malichor plague. You arrive 'alongside settlers, mercenaries and treasure hunters', but don't expect an island of such plenty to be left unguarded. This island looks to be steeped in magic, and its inhabitants won't hesitate to fight against invaders.
Greedfall puts a lot of emphasis on its status as an RPG, and character choice and development are clearly important to its creators. The game will have an extensive skill tree but no character classes, leaving the player to choose from 'over a hundred skills, along with thousands of combinations of equipment' to create their own unique experience. One thing in particular which is exciting about this game is its politics. Greedfall will feature numerous factions, all attempting to deal with the influx of settlers. Each faction will have their own 'beliefs, territories, goals, allies and enemies', and the player will rely upon an 'intricate reputation system'. Every choice the player makes will apparently alter the 'geopolitical landscape of the island'– so no pressure.
Spiders describe the game as a labour of love, and whilst it still looks to need a bit of work, the premise for this game is certainly exciting.
Greedfall is due to release on September 10th.
