The Best PS4 Third-Person Shooters Available in 2019

By Dave Horobin,
What are the best third person shooters on PS4? Whilst it was the Xbox 360 that received the "shooter box" nickname, there's no shortage of third-person shooters that are well worth playing on the PlayStation 4. If you're a fan of the third-person shooter genre, the list of games available on the PS4 is as large as it is diverse. Those looking to hunt down more PlayStation trophies can look forward to a strong variety of challenges on the way to their next Platinum. From the emotional journey that Naughty Dog's The Last of Us takes players on through to the chaotic and often mindless destruction in Just Cause, there are numerous third-person shooters to cater for a wide range of tastes.

Choosing which third-person shooter to pick up next might seem like a daunting task, so we're here to help you narrow down the choice by using your community ratings to put together our list of the best PS4 third-person shooters available in 2019.

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

Uncharted 4 Logo

While no game is perfect, Uncharted 4's storytelling approaches that limit. The sheer graphical prowess is every bit as important to the wonderful sense of exploration as it is to the compelling acting. A simple but enjoyable online suite is the best use of the game's fun mechanics as much of the gameplay can grow stale from too much exposure or limiting environmental design during the story. While this tale could have used a little trimming, it's still an awesome adventure filled with riches and rewards, not the least of which is a digital photo album of your adventure that justifies the inclusion of the share button on your controller. If you're after the Platinum, be warned — the Uncharted 4: A Thief's End Trophies list contains a number of multiplayer requirements.

Fallout 4

Screenshot 1

Choice is the crux of what makes Fallout 4 an exceptional game. It excels at many things, and while it doesn't master any of them, this excellence allows for players to choose what the game is for them. The only true let down is in the story presentation where developer Bethesda Game Studios clearly put in a lot of effort to improve the quality but ended up only highlighting the shortcomings of their engine, writing, and voice acting. Although it isn't always clear as to how game systems function, the breadth of these systems makes the learning process enjoyable and rewarding. Don't expect to lose yourself in an emotionally charged plot, but do expect to gleefully lose countless hours of your life to vaporizing raiders and building your dream post-apocalyptic fantasy. As with its predecessors, the Fallout 4 Trophies list will lead you to many of the game's secrets and best missions on the way to the Platinum trophy.

Watch_Dogs 2

1

Watch Dogs 2 steps things up in a lot of ways. San Francisco carries a liveliness that Chicago never had, as well as a jubilance that was lost to Aiden's grim, and often boring, tale. The main cast is full of energy, character, and pop culture references, and a healthy rotation among them keeps their sometimes overwhelming personas from becoming too irritating. The control given to the player over the world is powerful, nuanced, and fast, allowing for a variety of solutions to a problem, although your remote control car and quadcopter can solve almost any situation, discouraging experimentation. Thankfully, the game puts points into the qualities that count, so even if the dangers to Marcus are minimized, the wit that is required to succeed and the power that you control result in a pure sense of video-gamey fun. The fun extends into the Watch_Dogs 2 Trophies list, where players will need to get cops to swarm on a man in a donut costume, pet a bunch of dogs and snap a pic of someone mid-vomit in order to grab the Platinum trophy.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

12/09/2018 - Carousel

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a sequel that does a lot well, although its biggest detriment is how safely the developers seemed to play it. A lot of the game will feel like more of the same, which for some may start to wear thin three lengthy games into the series. If you're not yet fatigued by the familiarity, or if you focus on spending your skill points on the great but weirdly missable new stuff, it's a much more enjoyable game. It has the flavor of a summer blockbuster. You know what you're getting with Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and while you can't say it breaks through any boundaries or leaves you stunned for long after the credits roll, it's fun while it lasts and remains an exciting third act to Lara's reimagined origin story. The Shadow of the Tomb Raider Trophies list is full of the usual exploration and combat challenges, but if you want to extend your adventure beyond the Platinum trophy there's a bunch of challenge tomb DLC to enjoy as well — each with its own trophy list.

The Last of Us Remastered

The Last of Us Remastered

The Last of Us was one of the most beloved games of the last generation, arriving little more than a year before the PS4 launched. Naturally, it was remastered for the modern generation and we’re glad it was. While Naughty Dog’s other major recent series, Uncharted, deserves its place on this list as well, Joel and Ellie outshine Nathan Drake due to the emotional road trip journey the pair take in a post-fungal apocalypse. There’s a reason it won more than 200 Game of the Year awards, and if you haven’t played it yet, there’s no reason to keep delaying. It’s simply one of the best games from one of the best studios to arrive on PS4. Unfortunately like most modern Naughty Dog titles, you will have to grind through the multiplayer requirements in the The Last of Us Remastered Trophies list in order to get to that shiny Platinum trophy.

Grand Theft Auto V

Grand Theft Auto V

Rockstar has once again crafted an absolute masterpiece in Grand Theft Auto V. With this kind of hype, a game often falls short of the high expectations, but Grand Theft Auto V meets and exceeds them. After so many weeks of appearing at the top of the retail charts, we'd be surprised if most people don't own a copy already. If you don't, Grand Theft Auto V is a game you absolutely need to have in your collection and is something that everyone should experience and enjoy. Just don't expect a quick journey to the Platinum trophy – the Grand Theft Auto V (PS4) Trophies list requires a grind to Level 100 in Grand Theft Auto Online as well as 70 gold medals across story mode missions.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2's vast, detailed and stunningly beautiful open world sits as the perfect backdrop for its compelling and well-paced story filled with epic set pieces. With deeper gameplay mechanics, a larger cast of diverse and interesting characters to meet, and a wealth of content from side objectives to mini-games, RDR2 is a shining example of what makes Rockstar's games so special. It might have been a long eight-year wait for a follow-up to Red Dead Redemption, but it's been well worth it as the game may go down as the greatest of this generation. Few games have ever had as much hype around them as this one, and yet few have ever met and even exceeded their expectations in the way Red Dead Redemption 2 has. Like the other Rockstar game in this round-up, the Trophies contains online grinding and a gold-medal completion on the majority of the game's missions. Like most precious metals in the Wild West, the Platinum trophy won't be easy to obtain.

HITMAN 2

Carousel Image

It's certainly true that a lot of what HITMAN 2 does well are things that HITMAN from 2016 did well too, but much of what made that game great is taken a step further this time, making this new sequel the best HITMAN game in almost 20 years. IO deserves praise for knowing their series so well and bringing the types of changes to this sequel that longtime fans will appreciate most of all. It's the most accessible HITMAN to date thanks to improved information sharing, but it also runs deeper than anything before it, making it a game truly built for the fans that know Agent 47 best. No other stealth game plays like HITMAN, and HITMAN 2 is the best this unique series has ever been. Like its predecessor, the HITMAN 2 Trophies list unfortunately doesn't contain a Platinum trophy. This is a real shame, as the trophies you can unlock are among some of the most inventive and fun in the genre.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

The Phantom Pain is the kind of game that actually feels as if every seemingly insignificant gameplay detail actually has a real purpose. Every mission, side-op and minute spent assigning staff back at Mother Base makes a real difference to what can or cannot be achieved out on the field. At its core, it is still a stealth-action game, but it never ties you down to just being stealthy. Every mission can be approached in a multitude of different ways and it's left up to the player how to progress. The more manageable approach to storytelling may not seem true to the Metal Gear Solid series to date, but it fits in well with the game's more flexible approach, which lets people attack the game head on or play in smaller bites without needing to worry that at any moment they may have to set aside an hour purely to watch a surprise cut-scene. Like the rest of the Metal Gear Solid series the road to full completion of the Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Trophies list is a long one. You will need to collect everything there is to collect and get an S-rank in all missions if you want that Platinum trophy.

Fortnite

Screens

When Fortnite was originally revealed, there was no mention of a battle royale. What we saw was an intriguing game about searching for supplies, building fortifications and fighting off waves of monsters in co-op. When the game launched in July 2017 with it's Save the World mode, no-one could have imagined the impact it would have when Epic announced that they would be adding a free-to-play battle royale mode to Fortnite in September 2017. Since then, its child-friendly cartoonish design has gone on to take the gaming world by storm and make Epic billions of dollars. With a unique base building aspect thrown into the battle royale mix and a steady stream of updates to keep players interested, there's no other game quite like it. Sadly Battle Royale will do nothing for your trophy collection — if you want to finish off the Fortnite (PS4) Trophies list and get the Platinum, you're in for a serious grind in the game's original Save the World mode.

Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2

Pvz garden warfare 2

Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 has managed to take all of the best bits from the first game, build on them and then add more good things on top of them. All of our favourite characters are back, whilst the newer characters that have been introduced are fun to play. One of the biggest improvements is the addition of the Backyard Battleground hub base, and the addition of the single player focused quests, missions and collectables means that this game appeals to both single and multiplayer gamers more than ever. The bright colours and fun gameplay are ever present and there isn't a lot going wrong here apart from some issues with the sound and music. For fans of the first Garden Warfare game, this sequel is a must play. For those who haven't had the chance to experience the plants and zombies war yet, it's hard to find a reason not to recommend this game. The Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 Trophies list requires a lot of online co-ordination and perseverance — bear that in mind if you are after the Platinum.

Just Cause 4

Just Cause 4

Just Cause 4 gives off a bad first impression with new systems poorly explained and a visual downgrade apparently seeking to solve the series' previous performance woes. Get just a few hours in, though, and you'll have unlocked Rico's trinity of toys that combine to make this sequel Rico's best coup d'etat yet. Dispatching enemies and blowing up bases have never been more fun given the game's new tools. Despite issues in several areas, Just Cause is ultimately about the scale of its action moments over which players have complete control and the free-form sandbox in which players run amok. To these ends, Just Cause 4 is the best in the series. The Just Cause 4 Trophies list will see you getting inventive with all of Rico's new gadgets, but you'll need all the right moves if you want the Platinum.

Tom Clancy's The Division

Screenshot 2

The Division’s dense and stunningly recreated version of New York City provides an interesting environment for you to explore, and the overall story arc ties each of its components together in a cohesive way. As a cover-based shooter, it’s more than competent and will provide an entertaining and worthwhile experience for those of you that want to play through the story and then move on to the next game. If the enticement of better loot and stat optimization catches hold of you, however, there’s a chance that The Division may well become your next addiction thanks to a host of post-launch tweaks and updates. With exclusively online requirements, the Tom Clancy's The Division Trophies list will become increasingly difficult with the launch of The Division 2 in 2019. If you want that Platinum, you should act fast.
