Sonic Mania Developer Co-Founds a New Studio

By Sam Quirke,
Christian Whitehead, the lead creator behind Sonic Mania, has founded a new studio. Bringing on board plenty of talent as well as retaining his proprietary engine, we can likely expect more twists on classic ideas.

According to Evening Star's new website there's job opportunities up for grabs too — an Environment Artist and a Level Designer. The studio is based in L.A. but has "operations" in London and Melbourne as well.

Christian developed the Retro Engine and Retro Software Development Kit in order to help SEGA bring Sonic CD to consoles, before creating the highly successful Sonic Mania. That technology has been rebranded as the Star Engine. It "retains its foundational retro-inspired philosophy, but opens the door to new technologies and optimizations."

Though we may not immediately see Evening Star work on further updates to classic Genesis-era titles, it seems likely that their future projects will retain a lot of the style and energy of those early experiences.

We've got the full list of Sonic Mania trophies - check the list for guides to unlocking them.
