Chucklefish CEO on PS4 Cross-Play: We Were Told No

By Sam Quirke,
Shawn Layden has gone on record with GameInformer to say that Sony is open for business when it comes to implementing cross-play. A few publishers report otherwise, most notably Chucklefish's CEO. Chucklefish recently published the popular Advance Wars homage Wargroove and famously brought Stardew Valley into our lives.

Layden was responding to growing pressure from the industry to be allowed to implement cross-play in their games, with many developers and publishers suggesting that Sony was playing favourites — by only allowing Fortnite through their gates. In the interview, Layden said:

People keep saying, “Why doesn’t Sony allow more people to have it?” We’re open for business on this one. All it takes is for publishers and developers who wish to permission it. As ever, just work with your PlayStation account manager, and they will walk you through the steps that we’ve learned through our partnership with Epic on how this works. I don’t believe right now there is any gating factor on that.
In a thread on ResetEra, many have reason to distrust Layden's claims. Most prominent was Chucklefish CEO Finn “Tiy” Brice, verified on ResetEra forums. His full statement is revealing, so here it is word for word:

We just launched Wargroove with crossplay between PC, Switch and Xbox so I wanted to chime in. We made many requests for crossplay (both through our account manager and directly with higher ups) all the way up until release month. We were told in no uncertain terms that it was not going to happen. From our side, we can *literally* toggle a switch and have it working. Of course policy work might be more complicated for Sony. Just wanted to provide some balance on the issue and say that it certainly isn't a question of developers having not contacted their account managers or having dropped the ball. We were told no.
It's a pretty damning statement, and the thread is full of growing sentiment that Sony will only budge on cross-play functionality if the potential financial gain or loss is Fortnite sized.

Whether you care about cross-play or not, the ongoing debate is certainly not doing wonders for Sony's or Layden's reputation.

We've got the full list of Wargroove trophies - check the list for guides to unlocking them.
