The Top 10 Most Played DLC of 2018

DLC isn't the most beloved aspect of modern gaming, but it can certainly extend the experience for a game that we just don't want to say goodbye to. Here's the DLCs that the TT community played the most in 2018.

10 — Lost on Mars for Far Cry 5

Far Cry 5 may not have blown critics out of the water, but clearly a sizeable chunk of players not only enjoyed it, but wanted more of it. It probably helps that Lost on Mars is a suitably bonkers tale of alien abductions and reanimated body parts. We suspect next year's sequel will have plenty of bizarre surprises in store as well.

9 — The Resistance for Call of Duty: WWII

Call of Duty: WWII was a much needed return to form after fans rebelled against Infinite Warfare the previous year. This DLC simply delivers the expected bonuses — more maps, more zombies, more ways to shoot and be shot at. It's all the fans were asking for, and they were happy to pay for it.

8 — Apocalypse for Battlefield 1

Battlefield 1 was a huge success, and when its DLC additions were arriving DICE must have been blissfully unaware of the marketing troubles they would be having with the game's sequel this October. Still, at least we can enjoy some good Battlefield releases earlier in the year. Apocalypse was the third expansion to the WW1 shooter, adding maps from some of the most brutal engagements of the conflict. The DLC also brought a new aerial dog-fighting game mode, a bunch of new weapons and two new bombers.

7 — Hours of Darkness for Far Cry 5

In case dismembered bodies on Mars wasn't enough, it seems players were also keen on Far Cry 5's other DLC. This time players were transported to the Vietnam War and a jungle setting. The gameplay relied much more heavily on stealth as players moved to free prisoners of war. It was a short but welcome change of scenery and pace.

6 — The Curse of the Pharaohs for Assassin's Creed Origins

Assassin's Creed Origins was a surprise critical hit after years of middling entries. The surprises continued with successful DLC launches. Curse was the more fanciful of the two offerings, giving players the chance to fend off and in some ways assist vengeful Egyptian spirits in the first truly fantastical segment of the series — something that would continue with the heavily mythological Odyssey.

5 — The City That Never Sleeps: Turf Wars for Marvel's Spider-Man

Marvel's Spider-Man was a fantastic package in its own right, and the three-part DLC expansion compliments it well by simply delivering more of the same — with a smattering of fan service via the return of Spidey's old flame, the Black Cat. This second entry focuses on Yuri and her turbulent relationship with the Maggia, as well as the return of classic villain Hammerhead. It's the weakest of the three episodes, but that only highlights how excellent the DLC is as a whole.

4 — The Hidden Ones for Assassin's Creed Origins

The first of Origins' DLC offerings was much more grounded in contrast to Curse, following Bayek after the events of the base game as he creates a fledgling Brotherhood. As well as showing a more thoughtful and reserved Bayek four years on and extending the story of the Brotherhood's origins, the DLC offered tough challenges for high-level players and more generous legendary loot — again, something that Odyssey would take on in its base game some months later.

3 — Turning Tides for Battlefield 1

An even more popular addition to the WW1 shooter, Turning Tides adds the Royal Marines as the action takes to the seas. The new maps focused on managing land, sea and air tactics in tandem in the war's coastal theaters. As well as the usual extra weapons and vehicles, the expansion also included a full Operation, featuring the assault on the Gallipoli peninsula in 1915.

2 — The City That Never Sleeps: The Heist for Marvel's Spider-Man

Perhaps only the most successful of the three DLCs because of its age (the third entry, in comparison, has only been out a couple of weeks at the time of writing), The Heist nevertheless contains some of the best writing in the City that Never Sleeps expansion — if not the whole game. The romantic history between Spidey and Black Cat charges their conversations without getting gross, and frequent interruptions from Miles and MJ on phone calls keep things humorous. Add in a fun little collectibles hunt with a twist in the tail and you have a perfect way to extend the fun of the base game.

1 — Forsaken for Destiny 2 (PS4)

Destiny 2 (PS4), like its predecessor, is a mixed bag of success and failure. It certainly hasn't set the world alight as Bungie may have liked thanks to a lot of teething issues — plus the simple fact that players would have to start their Destiny career over in the first place. Still, Forsaken has proven to be a popular addition for the dedicated fans of the series, much as The Taken King managed to be for the first game. It may have helped that the base game was free with PS Plus around the time of Forsaken's release, giving players a chance to try out the basic systems and gameplay before deciding to spend their hard-earned cash on the full expansion. It also helped that a fan favourite character was offed in the expansion's trailer, giving players a reason to jump in and take their revenge.
