Weekend Announcements August 10-12th Pt 1: EDF 5, Bee Simulator and More

By Rebecca Smith,
You may have noticed Weekend Announcements articles have been AWOL for the last few weeks. This is partly because there's been a bit of a shift in news staff personnel and also partly because I've been on holiday. The result is that this week's article will begin catching up on everything that has been missed over that period, and we have a whopping 20 titles to introduce today (and that's just to start). Because there are so many, we've split the article into two parts, and part one includes the first ten titles. Not all of them are confirmed for PlayStation platforms right now, with some only confirmed for "consoles", but you can still see if there's anything that interests you from the list below.

A Fisherman's Tale

INNERSPACE has teamed up with Vertigo Games to bring their "VR puzzle adventure game" to PlayStation VR later this year. Players assume the role of Bob, a fisherman puppet who lives alone in his cabin, shut away from the goings on of the world around him. They say ignorance is bliss, but when a storm alert is issued over the radio, Bob finds he needs to reach the top of the nearby lighthouse to turn on the light, and that won't be as easy as it seems. With the help of a variety of sidekicks, he'll need to break the laws of physics and solve puzzles if he's to succeed.

Air Missions: HIND

If you're sick of waiting for Ace Combat 7 to appear, you might at least be interested in 3DIVISION's "helicopter combat flight simulator" to tide you over. Players take control of an Mi-24 Hind assault helicopter, the "flying tank", as it goes on a variety of different missions. Not only must players make sure the mission is successful, they can prepare beforehand by choosing the right skin for the helicopter so that it blends in or stands out as needed, as well as choosing the two weapons with which the helicopter will be equipped, such as UPK 23 machineguns, GUV gun pods, FAB bombs, rockets, and missiles. The title will arrive digitally on PlayStation 4 on September 25th, with SOEDESCO set to publish the game physically on the same day.

Bee Simulator

Notice the title does not say "Beekeeper Simulator". This is because you don't take control of a bee farm, you instead take on the role of a bee. Players must do everything a diligent member of a bee hive would do — "check your wings, measure the antennae degree of deviation, take orders from the Queen, and bee-gin your first independent mission". The problems start when you learn the tree in which your hive sits is due to be cut down, and it's up to you to save your family. You'll do this by exploring and interacting with your surroundings, finding the best pollen, seeing off enemies with your sting, and teaching your sisters to dance. The game will arrive on PC later this year but is due to come to PlayStation 4 at some point after that.

Catch & Release

Unlike the first title in this article, METRICMINDS' PlayStation VR title takes a more relaxing view on fishing. Players get to explore the environment on their own terms, looking for the perfect fishing spot. Bordering on a simuation experience, players can then throw out a line before sitting back and relaxing while waiting for a catch. Have lunch, listen to the radio, skip stones, or just take in the scenery — the choice is yours. The title is due to hit PlayStation 4 later this summer.

Claws of Furry

Terahard Studios' side scrolling beat 'em up puts players in the role of a ninja cat. An unknown enemy has kidnapped your master and you need to defeat 50 levels of enemies to rescue him. Along the way, outfits can be unlocked that offer unique bonuses. Pussycat mode allows players to have checkpoints in each level, while Rogue-like mode tasks players with completing the levels without them. There's also an Arena mode. Up to four players can take part in local co-op when the game is released on PlayStation 4 on September 4th.

Earth Defense Force 5

The latest title in Sandlot's EDF franchise will soon be coming west. The game takes place in 2022, when the huge EDF base 228 was attacked by unknown monsters. While the force was distracted underground, a gigantic mothership took control of the skies and begin attacking anything and anyone. As a private citizen who was in base 228 when it was attacked, you decide to take up arms and take on the aliens that are threatening Earth's existence. The title will be arriving on PlayStation 4 later this year.

Fall of Light: Darkest Edition

RuneHeads' "story-driven action RPG" tells the story of a world where there is no natural light. Players step into the shoes of Nyx, a warrior embarking on a dangerous journey to reach the only place on Earth where sunlight still exists. He isn't alone, though; the warrior is accompanied by his daughter, Aether, who is an indigo child and can produce her own luminescence to light the way, but she needs protection if she's to reach their destination. The title originally launched on Steam last year but will arrive on PlayStation 4 next week on August 21st with original content, such as a new dungeon, new enemies, new traps, and new weapons.

Haunted Dungeons: Hyakki Castle

Happinet's "real-time dungeon RPG" is set during Japan's Edo period. Hyakki Island is where prisoners are exiled, but their isolated existence is interrupted by the appearance of a mysterious castle on the island. It brings many monsters with it, including the supernatural Yokai that have their roots in Japanese folklore. In addition to this, one prisoner seeks to overthrow the Shogun that keep the priosners under control. With the life of their leader under threat, players control a party of four Shogun special agents to eliminate the prisoner and deal with the mysterious monsters. Will you succeed when the game arrives on PlayStation 4 on August 30th?

Little Misfortune

Killmonday Games' upcoming "interactive story" shares the same world as the developer's previous title, Fran Bow. Misfortune Ramirez Hernandez is an eight-year-old girl seeking to find Eternal Happiness so she can gift it to her mother. Alongside her new friend Mr. Voice, she heads into the woods where she finds mysteries and a bit of bad luck. The story focuses on exploration and characters, not all of whom are pleasant, and player choices will have consequences. The team promises that you may "pet a doggy, a fishy, a wolfie, the Kraken, the kitty and the foxy". You'll also be visiting a pet cemetary with a shovel, so read into that what you will. The title is due to arrive on consoles next year.

Moonfall Ultimate

Fishcow Studio's "hand-painted side-scrolling 2D action RPG beat'em up" takes place in an industrial gothic universe known as Terra Nihil. Once a small Empire, an element called Lunarium has allowed the Empire to expand and hit its peak of glory. The problem is that aboriginal tribes known as Savages are attacking the area with increased frequency. It's up to you to find out why and to stop the attacks once and for all. The game is due to arrive on PlayStation 4 on September 4th.

Stay tuned for part 2 and the remaining ten titles.
