Assassin's Creed Odyssey is All About Player Choice

Choices matter more than ever in the upcoming adventures of Alexios or Kassandra. As we heard at E3 this year, players will be able to choose between a male or female protagonist at the start of the game. But according to this new mini-documentary from Ubisoft, choice runs a lot deeper than just the gender of your character.

In the video several developers explain what a "fully-fledged RPG" means to them, now that Assassin's Creed is moving in that direction. As well as choosing your character and upgrading them in the sense that we've previously seen, you'll also be upgrading your ship and recruiting crew based on your play style on the seas. With "30+ new abilities" players will be able to customise their combat approach more than ever, with more ways to specialise in stealth, ranged or blade combat.

Many quests will offer a chance to choose an approach before you start depending on your play style, and your choices in quests will lead to different conclusions. You can choose to be helpful, dismissive or arrogant in the face of NPCs' various cries for aid, and in the larger conflict you can choose to side with the Athenians or the Spartans in their efforts to dominate the land. This is a fluid choice; you can switch sides during your adventure, though it's not clear at the moment whether there's a point of no return in that regard.

In terms of romance, the developers describe a "handful" of options and mention that the romantic sub-plots don't intertwine closely with the main narrative; they're "regional" and designed to be a side activity. If you'd prefer to roll your character as someone who wouldn't dabble in that sort of thing, you're not forced to.

In another first for the series, players can expect multiple endings based on their decisions. This isn't dependent on just one major decision in the final act; the ending sequence will be altered by many decisions you have made along the way, with some consequences you may not have been expecting.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey arrives on October 5th.
