Déraciné Director Discusses His New VR Adventure Game

By Sam Quirke,
Déraciné was a surprise bonus announcement after the main PlayStation showcase at E3 last week. It also marks a significant departure for director Hidetaka Miyazaki, most well known for creating Dark Souls and Bloodborne. Déraciné is a much less intense, VR-based adventure. In an interview with PlayStation Blog , Miyazaki explains it all.

For long-time FromSoftware fans, this detour into adventure games wouldn't seem so strange. Miyazaki talks about the company's early history in the genre and a desire to revisit it. Miyazaki also refers back to the "strange, quirky and unique" games that the company used to make a long time ago, with smaller production teams, and Déraciné certainly seems to be a call back to that heritage.

Souls fans will definitely notice some FromSoftware hallmarks in this VR adventure, though: Miyazaki promises the same fragmented approach to storytelling and lore-building as well as retaining that beautiful and mysterious aura of the Souls games. Miyazaki says that his penchant for cryptic storytelling comes from reading books well above his literacy level as a child; a tale was always something to be unlocked in pieces, and always with indecipherable fragments in the mix.

Miyazaki's influences for Déraciné paint an intriguing picture of what we might expect. Far from the brooding, terrifying Lovecraft influences on Bloodborne, this new adventure draws inspiration from 19th century poet Fiona McLeod's odes to "sorrow and isolation". There will still be more tinges of warmth and hope than we might expect from a classic Souls game though. Miyazaki reveals that he once wanted to make a career of designing manga aimed at women, and Déraciné gives him an opportunity to do just that. Although his trademark themes of sorrow appear prominently in this latest project, Miyazaki hopes that the boarding school of Déracine will be more appealing from the start than Bloodborne's oppressive Yharnam.

Déracine will release exclusively for PlayStation VR at some point in 2018.
