When Overcooked was released on PlayStation 4 nearly two years ago, it took kitchens and couch co-op gameplay by storm. Today, developer Ghost Town Games has announced that they've once again teamed up with publisher Team17 to bring the game's sequel to console players, and Overcooked 2 will bring along new kitchens, recipes, chefs, and most importantly for some, online multiplayer.
Once again, the Onion Kingdom is in danger. The Onion King didn't seem to think there was anything wrong with reading aloud passages from the Necronomnomicon until he accidentally summoned an army of undead bread. If the conveniently named Unbread are to be defeated, you'll need to work your way through another wacky series of kitchens, such as a hot air balloon, a Wizard's school, or another planet entirely. Along the way, you'll concoct all kinds of meals — you'll be familiar with burgers, pizzas and burritos, but maybe not sushi, pasta, pancakes and cakes. Of course, it helps that there's always a chance you can set the kitchen on fire and the work surfaces will move around, and just in case you thought that was bad enough, this time the floors can collapse and there are overbearing waiters.
The game comes with a series of new gameplay features too. Levels will include new mechanics like moving walkways, controllable platforms and portals. In fact, the dynamic levels will change around players as both the recipes and levels themselves change over time. While players could drive around the world map before, this time there are new areas to find that can be opened up with secret buttons hidden across the map. While playing each level, players can now throw ingredients to each other, or if your aim is particularly good, straight into the pan or blender. If it's not so good, I'm sure the floor is fine anyway. Most importantly for some players, though, the game will feature both local and online multiplayer for up to four players. You can get a look at some of these new features in the trailer below.
Finally, the game will come with a variety of new chefs, such as an eagle, mouse, beaver, octopus, platypus, and even a unicorn. Kevin's back too. Those who pre-order the game will receive the "Too Many Cooks" chef pack that includes an alien, walrus, monkey, calico cat, and the aforementioned unicorn. You can see a couple of the new characters in the artwork below, as well as Kevin, in case you'd forgotten what he looked like.
Overcooked 2 will be available digitally on PS4 on August 7th for £19.99/€24.99/US$29.99. A physical edition will also be available, but Team17 recommends you check retailers for pricing.
