The Best PlayStation 4 MMOs Available in 2018

MMOs and consoles used to be mutually exclusive. If you wanted a taste of the genre, you'd have to go seek it out on PC where it was almost always found. These days, however, things are changing. Gaming on PlayStation 4 no longer means having to watch the MMO genre from afar. The platform plays host to a number of worthwhile MMOs, so if you're looking to try the genre for the first time or just find a console alternative to World of Warcraft, this list should do the trick. Below are what we feel are the best of the fledgling PlayStation 4 MMO market.

Destiny 2

Destiny 2 takes the groundwork set out by its predecessor and refines some of its rough edges, especially in terms of its plot. Bungie hasn't changed the fundamentals of the game but has made it feel a lot more accessible to new players. They've increasing the number of activities there are for players, although the grind does eventually set in. That said, it doesn't quite feel like a sequel. There isn't much in the way of brand new content — a lot of what has been added is the same as before but just repackaged in some way. The title does still have plenty of room to grow and if its life cycle is anything like that of the original Destiny, the game may look and feel different in two years time. With two expansions already on the horizon, we may even see a few changes in the very near future.

The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited

Whilst an MMO might not have been the expected direction for The Elder Scrolls series, for the most part it is done well. All the standard MMO elements are there, with mounts, pets, questing, looting and PvP all making an appearance. The amount of quests to partake in and the size of the world to explore is vast, with the different alliances giving you even more to explore. Unfortunately, the servers could not handle the game during the first week of release, with lengthened loading times and sometimes not even being able to get on the game. For the most part now these problems seem to have gone, but a few bugs and glitches do remain. They don't stop The Elder Scrolls: Tamriel Unlimited being a huge, fun game with endless corners to explore, and MMO fans will be right at home here, as will players of Oblivion or Skyrim before it. If you haven't had the chance to experience an MMO or previous Elder Scrolls game before, then this is a perfect one with which to take the plunge.

Elite: Dangerous

Elite: Dangerous is a unique game. It's given us a gigantic galaxy to explore of which it is nigh-on impossible to see the full extent. It's a classic space simulator through and through, to the point in which the controls and game mechanics can be hard to grasp. This in itself isn't a bad thing, but it won't appeal to everyone. Those who enjoy this genre of games will have a blast, but others will find it hard to fully enjoy. Only with a huge time investment will players get the full experience of the title, but with that comes a greater feeling of reward. The powerplay and CQC aspects can be exciting, but they can be completely ignored. Now that Elite: Dangerous is available to all, exploring the Milky Way galaxy in all its glory in the game is a good alternative to training in real life to become a fully fledged astronaut, but be prepared before you suit up.

DC Universe Online

DC Universe Online is a bit of a mixed bag. It has that MMO charm that can have you jumping in for a spot of fighting before watching a couple of hours fly by. The character customization and the iconic characters with whom you interact make for an enjoyable game. You will quickly start to repeat actions in the disguise of a new quest or scenario, but it's still hard to resist the addictive lure of the game when you're 20 hours in with a fancy looking superhero. To get that far, though, you may have to fork over a stupidly high amount to become a member for all of the benefits, but that's entirely your decision as to whether it's worth it. DC Universe Online entertaining for those who are fans of the genre and for someone who wants to get stuck in a world of superheroes and villains.

Neverwinter

Neverwinter is perhaps the closest thing a PlayStation player will get to World of Warcraft without jumping on their computer. Aesthetically, the fantasy universe will feel right at home to players looking for an MMO experience offering the magic and sorcery-driven drama of WoW. It's also based on the Dungeons & Dragons universe, which should make it especially appealing to anyone who is coming over from their tabletops to play online with friends and fellow raiders. With a wealth of expansions and the free-to-play entry price, it's a great game to introduce you to the genre if you're new. It's really got a lot for many different types of players, old, new, or something in between.

Warframe

Warfame is often favorably considered to be the quiet hit that Destiny sometimes wishes it could be. While Bungie's mega-franchise has historically launched to criticisms before saving face with strong expansions months later, many proponents of Warframe commend it for being an exciting and rewarding experience from the get-go. It's a game that continues to evolve over time even to this day, and the lore is rich and often consumed enthusiastically by its most ardent fans. If you like your MMOs to be set in a sci-fi universe and don't feel compelled by the asking price of Destiny, it's possible Warframe is the alternative for which you're looking. It's free to start and offers a welcoming learning curve that has won over countless fans for years at this point.
