developer Double Fine recently shared with backers a big milestone for the upcoming sequel to their cult-classic platformer Psychonauts
: what they're calling their "First Playable."
We've previously seen the Quarry art test
for Psychonauts 2
, but it was just that — a test. While it showed possible concepts the game might include, there wasn't much on offer in terms of actual gameplay. The First Playable is much more than that, and we'll get to see how the mechanics of the game will work, what the music might sound like and more. Double Fine discussed the First Playable in more detail in their Fig announcement
The “First Playable” is an area of the game that we’ve built to test our new pipelines and workflows across all departments — art, animation, tech, design, cinematics, etc. We’ve tested all of this a lot during pre-production, but this is our first big attempt to create a fully arted up, fully playable chunk of gameplay with all the systems, art, gameplay, and tech working in the same place.

There are also some behind-the-scenes glances at how all the pieces came together: talks with the composer about the direction they'd like to go with the music, employees testing out the build, various sides of development and even a visit to a goat farm to get inspiration for goat design. If you listen closely, Tim even makes a reference to a possible achievement — which would translate to a PlayStation trophy — for escorting a goat through the entire game.
