Shadowplay Studios Announces Puzzle Platformer Projection: First Light

By Ashley Woodcock,
Developer Shadowplay Studios and publisher Blowfish Studios have teamed up to form a new puzzle platformer, . Coming in the first half of next year, the title follows the adventures of a girl called Greta who lives in a mythological shadow puppet world. Greta will be heading out on a journey of self-enlightenment as she explores different cultures and is assisted by the legendary heroes she comes across.

Early on in the game, Greta will take control of a source of light. With this, she will then learn how to manipulate the light and form shadows. The shadows can then be used to create platforms, walls, and much more to help solve puzzles and get rid of enemies.

The game will come with atmospheric visuals and an "ethereal" soundtrack put together with antique instruments used for actual shadow puppet performances. Along the journey, players will travel through the history of shadow puppets as it evolves through the likes of Indonesia, China, Turkey, Greece, and 19th century England. Making sure that the game was as accurate as possible in the art of shadow puppetry, Shadowplay Studios sat down with renowned Australian puppeteer and historian of the craft, Richard Bradshaw, to gain insight to help shape the game.

Michael Chu, Founder at Shadowplay Studios, talks about how the idea was formed:

The idea behind Projection: First Light went off like a lightbulb in my head when I recalled playing with shadows on a wall as a child. After toying with light manipulation at a game jam, we discovered the concept had a number of wonderful gameplay applications, which we hope to share with the gaming community along with the rich art and history behind shadow puppetry when Projection: First Light releases early next year.
The set of new screens released with the announcement of the game showcases many different displays, including forests, sailing, bridges, a puppet theatre and a cemetery:
