Weekend Announcements September 22nd-24th: EGX 2017 Special

By Rebecca Smith,
Over the weekend we attended EGX 2017 in Birmingham, UK. While we'll have previews, news and gameplay footage to show you, we begin our coverage with a number of new titles that will be coming to the Playstation 4 in the future. There are eight new titles that we'll be introducing below:

Balance of Kingdoms

WoksOn Studios "competitive multiplayer strategy game" does exactly what it says on the tin. Players must build a kingdom on a beam that is perched precariously at the top of a mountain, as well as doing all they can to defeat their opponent. The different kingdoms have different specialities. The Knights of the Sword have strong stone buildings, cannons and an organised army. The Arcane Order focuses on defence through towers built from the toughest metals, and the use of magic to deflect attacks. Meanwhile, Clan Axebeard might only have flimsy wooden huts but they have catapults and a tribe of brave warriors. As well as the multiplayer mode, there will be a single player campaign, free-build and challenge modes. The game is coming to Playstation 4 in the future.

BFF or Die (EU)

ASA Studio's "tactical-action-puzzler" tells the story of four alien students at the Intergalactic Time Academy. One day they decide to go joyriding in a Chrono-Crosser. They go back in time to Ancient Egypt, but a malfunction means that they can't get back. Up to four players must work together to find the orbs that can power up their Chrono-Crosser, but they must avoid the mummies if they're to escape with their lives. They must use different skills to be successful, such as lighting up different parts of the level, moving their teammates to otherwise inaccessible parts of the levels, activating decoys and teleporting. The title will be coming to Playstation 4 next year.

Dead Cells

Motion Twin's upcoming title is described as "a rogue-lite, metroidvania action-platformer" and that's a pretty accurate description. Players assume the role of a resurrected hero who must fight his way through a randomly generated castle to find and kill its keepers. If you die, you go back to the beginning to fight your way through another randomly generated layout, but you do keep your weapon upgrades. The only way that you will succeed is to kill enemies through "2D souls-lite combat", die, learn from those mistakes, respawn and repeat. The title will be coming to unspecified consoles next year.

Dead Exit

When you think of a genre for a zombie survival title, a card game likely isn't the first to spring to mind. Regardless, RadiationBurn tasks players with saving people, finding supplies and transport, and getting out alive. You'll need to control your base while wisely using those resources and survivors, but be careful — alliances can quickly turn sour and people can stab you in the back when you're least expecting it. Up to eight players can compete against each other or band together, or you can try to survive on your own. The game will be coming to Playstation 4 sometime in the future.

The Krucer Parallax

In RadiationBurn's second upcoming title, players assume control of a squadron of ships as the fight across an unknown galaxy, but for who are they fighting and who is the enemy? Well, players get to make that decision themselves by signing up to one of two sides. There's the General Democratic Union (GDU) that is a collection of united worlds that is built on many years of political negotiations and respect. On the other hand there's the Krucer Technocratic Commonwealth (KTC) that is a ruthless dictatorship run by the Krucer family and supported by elite power mongers. You choose which side you support and whose ships you'll be flying. The title will be coming to Playstation 4 in the future.

The Living Dungeon

The third and final RadiationBurn title on the list is a board game this time, where up to nine players can compete in a dungeon tournament. During a turn, players roll five action dice and have two minutes to use those actions as they see fit. Not only are they trying to survive the dangers of the dungeon, such as traps and monsters, players will also need to battle against other adventurers. Use combat, agility and/or dungeon manipulation to be successful. The game will be coming to Playstation 4 sometime in the future.

Once Upon A Time In Roswell

Quarter Circle Games' atmospheric horror title puts players in the role of Detective Franklin Reinhardt. It's 1947 and somewhere near the location of the Roswell UFO incident, a family has gone missing. As the detective examines a deserted house, he finds that an unearthly presence is following him and it isn't too pleased with his interference. The demo at EGX took players through a deserted hotel with players having to contend with WWII flashbacks, a range of puzzles and exploration, as well as the presence that was all too happy to remove him from the picture. The title will be coming to Playstation 4 in May 2018.

Hairy Heart Games' upcoming title is "a fast-paced, neo-mexican, space-punk, driving experience". The 3D racing title has one track along which players must travel. Avoid traps, perform gravity defying twists and jumps, find new abilities and powerups, and unlock new vehicles. The game also promises a "cast of fun characters and a cool story". You'll be able to try it for yourself when the game comes to Playstation 4 next year.

Will you be picking up any of these titles?
