PlayLink Introduces New Way of Gaming with Friends

By Rebecca Smith, 10 months ago
When the Just Dance franchise moved onto Playstation 4, Ubisoft Paris allowed players to use mobile phones so that Move controllers were no longer needed. Then, when The Jackbox Party Pack franchise came to consoles, these games allowed players to use mobile phones to support a far larger number of players than would be possible with Dualshock controllers alone. Now, Sony is taking the concept a bit further with PlayLink.

The new PlayLink branded games will allow players to turn smart phones and tablets into proper controllers by making use of their touchscreen and camera functions. Depending on the game's requirements, you'll be able to "swipe, pinch, drag, tilt, rotate or even snap selfies and draw crafty doodles". All that players need to do is to install the free companion app onto the device that is needed, turn on the Playstation 4 and TV, and off they go.

PlayLink titles are designed specifically for playing with groups of friends or family members. While quizzes and selections of mini-games will likely be the main sort of titles to be included in PlayLink, they'll also include titles like crime thrillers, too.

That's You!

The first PlayLink title to be released is Wish Studios' comedy quiz game. Up to five players can use up to 1,000 questions, doodle challenges and selfies to find out what they really think about each other. President of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida, Wish Studios' developer Tom Bennett, Sony XDev's Pete Smith and Claire Bromley, and SIE JAPAN Studio's Nic Doucet got together to demonstrate the game in the following video.

PlayLink will be launching as early as next month. Playstation Plus members will be able to play the full version of That's You! for free from July 4th.

Hidden Agenda

Supermassive Games has had a very busy E3 2017. Not only have they announced VR titles The Inpatient and Bravo Team, their detective thriller will also be arriving later this year.

Like all of the developer's narrative-driven games so far, players will be faced with moral dilemmas where their decisions can mean the difference between life and death. Up to six players will be able to decide how the story unfolds, but not everybody will have the same objective that they are working towards.

Frantics is a collection of "fun and manic" arcade-style mini-games. Up to four players face off against each other across a variety challenges where they'll have to bluff, battle, negotiate and co-operate if they want to be the victor. Just to help, the mischievous host The Fox will be stirring things up when the game releases this year.

Knowledge is Power

Up to six players can take part in this trivia quiz show. Power plays and challenges will aim to put players off, especially when they need to rely on speed and accuracy from their distracting opponents. This title will also be releasing this year.

SingStar Celebration

The final title to release this year is the latest instalment in the SingStar franchise. Up to eight players can sing a mix of massive hits, party classics and other upbeat tracks. The game will support SingStar microphones as well as smartphones that have installed the SingStar Mic App.

More PlayLink titles are also in development. We'll be sure to let you know as we get more news on these!
