Call of Duty: WWII Revealed

By Rebecca Smith,
Call of Duty: WWII will finally take players away from the futuristic setting that has been so familiar in recent years. The game features a campaign that intends to portray the unbreakable bonds of a platoon of soldiers, and the tale of the common people. The date is June 6th, 1944. It is D-Day and you're landing in Normandy to battle your way through some of history's most notable locations across Europe.

For the majority of the game, players will assume the role of Private Ronald "Red" Daniels, a new recruit in the US 1st Infantry Division. He is joined by his close friend Private First Class Robert Zussman (voiced by Jonathan Hunter of Kingdom and Justified), 1st Lieutenant Joseph Turner (voiced by Jeffrey Pierce who has taken part in previous Call of Duty titles), and Technical Sergeant William Pierson (voiced by Josh Duhamel of Transformers fame). After landing on the beaches, the group will work their way through France and Belgium towards Germany. There will be a wide variety of weapons for players to use, from both the Allied and Axis sides, including bolt action rifles and machine guns. Sledgehammer Games has spent 2.5 years interviewing veterans, filming locations, studying photos and archived footage, and carrying out extensive research to attempt to get an accurate portrayal of the essence of World War II.

The game's multiplayer will, unsurprisingly, also pit players against each other across those notable European locations and will focus on "boots on the ground" combat — the classic fun, fast, strategic run and gun action. War is a new narrative driven mode where players take part in some of the iconic WWII moments in teams, where the Allies and Axis fight for objectives. Also revealed was Divisions, which allow players to enlist in a unit of their choice, like Infantry and Armored Divisions. Players will be able to take on other Divisions but it will impact the way that you progress through the multiplayer system. Then there will be Headquarters, an "off-the-frontlines" social hub where fans can connect, compete, and show off their awards with each other. Only a seconds-long peek was shown during the reveal but its appearance reminded me of Destiny's Tower hub. More information is promised at E3.

Zombies mode will make its return too as a stand-alone co-op mode. Focusing on the Third Reich's attempt to create an army in the final stages of the war, Sledgehammer describes the mode as a "horrifying" experience. Again, more information is promised at E3.

As well as the standard edition of the title, the game will be available in a Digital Deluxe Edition that will include a copy of the game, the season pass and "additional bonus content". There is also the Pro Edition. This edition will include a copy of the game, a collectible steelbook, the game's season pass and "additional bonus content". All of the game's major DLC packs will be exclusive to Playstation 4 players for 30 days before they are released on Xbox One, a repeat of previous years.

Players who pre-order the title will gain access to a "private" multiplayer beta, also available first on Playstation 4. The date of this beta is yet to be confirmed. Pre-ordering the title through GameStop will also net players an exclusive limited edition baseball cap.

Call of Duty: WWII will be released on November 3rd.
