The Fall Part 2: Unbound Story Trailer and Screens Released

By Ashley Woodcock,
We covered just a touch of the story in The Fall Part 2: Unbound during the announcement of the title back in August last year. Developer Over the Moon Games goes into great depth on the game's story and they've also released a video for the game showcasing the story as we see what could happen if an AI becomes unbound.

You will take on the role of A.R.I.D., "an abandoned and broken AI who struggles to survive a collapse in her operating parameters". The mission will be for A.R.I.D. to re-establish her boundaries by building her own set of rules before an unknown and dark invasive process shuts her down for good.

John Warner, the game's director, is inspired by contemporary issues and asks several questions surrounding the AI:

There’s a growing debate about the looming threat of artificial intelligence. Can we build an AI that serves us? One that we can control? Or at the very least, one that is psychologically healthy and isn’t a threat to us? For that matter, what is ‘health’? Can it be defined for the sake of building an AI, and do humans even have a good definition for that? How do you know that you’re healthy?
The aim of the game will be to allow the gameplay to carry the story-telling and also to keep it fun and exciting. A.R.I.D. will have the ability to invade other robots. As A.R.I.D. becomes more familiar with how other robots operate, she will build a better understanding of each robot's parameters and perceptual mechanics. This creates unique challenges as A.R.I.D. will then be able to take what she learns from one robot to another. Successfully complete puzzles by viewing the environment from different perspectives and comparing information in different and creative ways.

Warner talks more about how the gameplay was created:

Having a robust way of perceiving the world is a pretty good starting point to talk about psychological health, and by making gameplay around these mechanics, we can explore a lot of fun ideas without being overly cerebral or choking the game with philosophical dialogue.
The development team aims to present players with perspectives they've never experienced in video games before. The development team dishes out more details on the depth of the story:

With a host of unusual characters, it explores themes of artificial intelligence, the value of personal boundaries and respecting others. Its gameplay and its story are specifically designed to make players reflect on these ideas, through the lens of a familiar Metroidvania meets Point and Click Adventure framework. The Fall Part 2: Unbound is made for players who have been waiting for the conceptual underpinning of games to catch up with their technological artistry.

The Fall Part 2: Unbound didn't make its originally planned Q1 2017 release date and will now be looking to release in Q3 2017.
