Paladins Moves from Alpha to Closed Beta on Console

Originally announced as a beta, Paladins: Champions of the Realm ended up coming to consoles in closed alpha format. Thanks to the brave gamers who played through the bugs and crashes of early development, Hi-Rez Studios is ready to move the multiplayer shooter into a beta phase.

What does this mean for the title? If you're already playing, not much, although you've surely noticed the legion of patches that have dropped lately. The console versions are now just one champion behind the PC open beta after previously being three or four characters behind. The beta remains closed for now.

But there is one big change — the store is now open for business. For those who have been looking to purchase the Founder's Pack, it is now available on the PlayStation Store. Veterans of SMITE will be familiar with the format. Although the game is free-to-play and characters can be unlocked with in-game currency, players can make a one-time purchase of a Founder's Pack that grants access to all current and future characters available in the game. The Founder's Pack is available at 25% off until the end of March, making it US$14.99 instead of US$19.99.

It also has some other goodies. If you're a cosmetics collector in SMITE, you're probably going to want to get hands on with the Ares skin that transforms him into his Paladins doppelganger, Fernando. Of course, there's one that will make Fernando look like Ares, too, with the God of War Fernando Collection. There is also a hefty in-game currency boost, 10 chests that grant cards and cosmetics, all standard champion voice packs, and beta-exclusive mounts and skins. Just like SMITE, if you've already purchased characters or voice packs with gold, you'll get an instant refund.

  • Every Champion we ever release. Ever. Forever.
  • All Standard Champion Voice Packs
  • 10 Radiant Chests, each containing Cards, Skins, and more.
  • 72,000 Essence to craft the cards you want.
  • God of War Fernando Collection
  • Infernal War Horse Mount
  • A Paladins-themed skin for Ares in Smite on PS4.
  • If you have previously purchased Champions with Gold or Crystals, you will be refunded the Gold cost of each Champion upon purchase of the Paladins Founder's Pack.

If you don't yet have access to the closed beta, it will instantly grant that as well, but invites are still being sent out for players to get in at no cost. It'll also be released into open beta "at a future date" and then, of course, the full release will still be free-to-play, so there will be plenty of chances to try things out. You can still sign up for the PS4 beta here.

As for what's on the menu for the title in the coming months, Hi-Rez says they are "on track to release more than 15 champions this year." And there is that open beta, and perhaps a full release, on the horizon.
