Weekend Headlines Feb 24-26th Part 1: Announcements

By Rebecca Smith,
Last weekend, developers were preparing for the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco that is currently taking place. This meant that we had a lot of reveals, as well as updates, release dates, delays, trailers and screenshots. Once again, we had so much news that we're having to split the roundup into two parts. The first part covers all of the announcements. Take a look:

ARK Park

If you've ever wanted to get up close and personal with the creatures from ARK: Survival Evolved then this title is for you. Through Playstation VR, players can explore and encounter over 100 creatures from the Jurassic era. You begin your adventure at a visitor centre that surrounds visitors with life-sized holographic dinosaurs. From there, players can explore the centre's attractions on foot, in vehicles or on the back of a dinosaur. Creatures are captured by using items or weapons, or by solving puzzles. Players who have spent a bit of time in ASE will be rewarded with the ability to import their creature collection from that title. The title will be available later this year.

BAFL: Brakes Are For Losers

In some arcade racing games, it's actually detrimental to your performance to use brakes. This game is one of those. In a top-down tribute to "Old School Arcade Racing Games" like Super Sprint or Indy Heat, up to eight players hurtle around a single screen without the use of brakes. Take on over 15 tracks using one of over 10 vehicles and grab first place against either the AI or your friends. The game will be released in Q2 2017, although it has only been confirmed for the generic "consoles" so far.

Battle Princess Madelyn

If you feel like this old school fast paced action adventure title has familiar gameplay then you would be right, seeing as classics like Ghouls N' Ghosts and Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap are the inspirations for this title. When an evil wizard kidnaps Madelyn's family and kills her dog, most princesses would run and hide. Madelyn isn't most princesses; she's going to fight. The game features an original story written by a professional childrens' author and hand drawn artwork to bring the story of Princess Madelyn to life. Across ten levels (each with five stages), players will engage in challenging combat and find surprises and many, many weapons. The game will be released on Playstation 4 later this year.

Bookbound Brigade (JP)

It isn't just developers and publishers that have made their way to GDC. Games In Italy is an exhibit that is being run as a collaboration between the Italian Ministry of Economic Development, the Italian Trade Agency ICE and AESVI, the Italian Games Trade Body. They've announced three new titles at GDC and the first of these poses a strange question: "What if all the protagonists of books lost their memory?" In this Metroidvania title, players get to venture into the worlds of the books that they studied at school. Join forces with real and fictional heroes to defeat the hordes of monsters and bring order back to those literary worlds. Players can get their hands on the title on Playstation 4 in Q1 2018.

Genesis Alpha One

The latest title to be revealed by publisher Team17 is a "revolutionary mix of roguelike shooter, base building and survival". The near future has been destroyed by wars, corrupt regimes, unchecked global capitalism, pollution and the exploitation of natural resources. Society has collapsed and four corporations have come together to form the Genesis program. Players assume the role of a pioneer, the Captain of a Genesis starship who has been tasked with travelling into the unexplored depths of space. To save humanity, you must build a space vessel, farm resources, defeat alien infestations and clone creatures. You can do all of this on Playstation 4 in the future... hopefully before everything goes wrong.

GUILTY GEAR Xrd REV 2

The latest installment in the Guilty Gear series will arrive on Playstation 4 and Playstation 3 this year. The game will add two new characters — Baiken and Answer — as well as new stages, new moves, rebalancing for every character and a new story in Episode Mode that sheds new light on Jam, Kum, Raven, Dizzy, Answer and Baiken.

The Last Night

Originally a flash game that won the cyberpunkjam, this cinematic platformer has fledged into a console title. The game is set in a 2D cyperpunk open world that has four unique districts, each with their own architecture, cultures, industries and "crowd of citizens doing their own stuff". Players will be able to travel freely between these districts, converse with the characters and face many tricky situations in which they decide how to handle them. More information on this title is promised for this year, but you'll have to settle for the all-too-brief teaser below for now.

Lightfield

This "hyperfuturistic omnidirectional racing game" is a cross between arcade racing and free flying. While players can fly around the tracks freely, if they snap to a nearby surface then it will provide a speed boost as well as spinning the ship around. Finding the perfect line is a must if you want to beat your opponents, both in speed and style. The game currently features seven tracks across three environments, three game modes (Race, Time Trial, Exploration Mode), online and local multiplayer and a soundtrack composed by Viennese musician Zanshin. It's coming to Playstation 4 this spring.

Oops!

The second title to be revealed by Games In Italy is a puzzle platformer that is set in the world of stop motion. The game tells the story of two ladybugs whose love for each other is tested to the limit when they are moved away from each other. Players will have to reunite the pair through five locations. The game will be released on Playstation 4 in July 2018.

Past Cure

Phantom 8 has announced their debut title, a "3rd person action-stealth shooter" for Playstation 4. Players assume the role of highly decorated ex-elite soldier Ian and his quest to find the men who betrayed and transformed him. Once the subject of secret human trials, he was held in a European prison. Now he has skills like mind control and telekinesis but this comes at the cost of his sanity, because every time he uses these powers, the madness grows inside him. Between the gritty real world and an abstract dream world, Ian will hunt down his adversaries with the help of his brother Markus and the mysterious double agent Sophia.

Railway Empire

Publisher Kalypso Media is bringing a new tycoon simulator to Playstation 4 in Q4 2017. Build, manage and expand your railway company through 100 years of American industrialisation where steam is vital to keep things running. You'll need to better three other rival tycoons, resorting to cutthroat tactics and maybe even sabotage. Choose from over 40 trains, build railway stations, manage your workforce and develop over 300 technologies to help you stay ahead.

Ruiner

This Play Anywhere title is "a top-down action shooter created in the spirit of cult-cyberpunk anime". The game will not let you rest. You'll need to keep moving or you'll die, cornered by the aggressive enemies, You'll get a variety of weapons, skills and gadgets to help you defeat your foes, but it won't be easy. You'll need to balance your health and ammo with the enemy onslaught as well as using the environment to your advantage. You'll be able to try the game out on Playstation 4 this summer.

Songbringer

This procedurally generated action RPG is set in a 13,000 B.C. Milky Way. Roq is cruising the galaxy in search of the ultimate party and he'll find it on board the art party ship Songbringer. However, after accidentally awakening an ancient evil army (as you do), the galaxy is thrown into turmoil and it's up to Roq to sort things out, together with his sidekick Jib. Each player will enter a six-letter seed code at the start of the game that will generate one of 308 million unique environments to explore. Share the code with your friend and you'll both be able to explore the same world. The game is coming to Playstation 4 this summer.

Tower 57

Amiga games weren't known for their pixel perfect graphics. Players had to use a bit of imagination to become immersed in a game and developer Pixwerk is hoping to capture those elements for their upcoming twin stick shooter. Players are trapped in a steampunk tower that consists of threats taken directly from camp sci-fi stories. Tentacles? Check. Cutting edge lasers? Check. Together with a friend, your Tesla gun and plenty of ammo, not only will you need to survive, you'll need to discover the mysteries of the tower and defeat them once and for all. You'll get to take on the tower on Playstation 4 this spring.

Toygeddon

The third title to be revealed by Games In Italy is a "Racing Online Battle Arena". The game requires groups to co-operate like they would in a MOBA, only this time they're racing to destroy their opponents and steal their abilities. There will be three unique game modes — Capture the Battery, Exodus and King of the Mall — that can accommodate up to four players locally or up to ten players online. You'll get to try them out on Playstation 4 in Q3 2017.
