Weekend Headlines Jan 13-15th: Announcements, Updates and Trailers

By Rebecca Smith,
At the end of last week, Nintendo revealed more details and games for their upcoming console. You would be forgiven for thinking that it was all that happened last week, seeing as it was all that social media talked about over the weekend. However, you would be wrong. Here are the headlines that likely fell under your radar.

Announcements

You'll likely have heard of Has-Been Heroes. It's coming to the Nintendo Switch. The one thing that they didn't mention too loudly, though, was that it isn't exclusive. Frozenbyte's "rogue-like game of strategy and action" is also appearing on the Playstation 4. Players take control of three heroes who are must protect the King's twin princesses as they travel to Princess Academy. Combining real time and turn-based strategy mechanics players must use hundreds of random spells and items to defeat the many enemies that will likely disrupt that journey. Every run is different and the threat of permadeath is never too far away. You'll get to try out the title in March.

Puyopuyo Tetris was the second title to come out of the Nintendo Switch conference. Released in Japan two years ago, SEGA's collison of the Puyos and Tetriminos games will finally be making its way to the west as a physical Playstation 4 release for US$29.99 or regional equivalent. Players can try out a range of Adventure and Arcade modes, both in single player and multiplayer, when the game is released this spring.

Not much is known about Life of Black Tiger aside from a preview trailer of questionable quality. Players appear to assume to role of a black tiger as it kills everything in sight, both human and animal. Why? No idea. Developer 1Games is known for their mobile and browser titles with this looking to be a port of one of the former.

Recruits was first showcased at E3 2015 in a very brief montage of upcoming titles, but back then it was Xbox exclusive. Now developer QuByte Interactive has confirmed that the top down shooter will be coming soon to Playstation 4 as well. Players must lead their soldiers to victory if they are to progress through the ranks. Lose a battle and you'll likely lose those soldiers forever.

Siralim 2 was released on PC last year. While work on the title is winding down, developer Thylacine Studios will still be finding the time to port the title to Playstation 4 and Vita. The "old-school monster catching RPG" tasks players with summoning and customising hundreds of creatures to fight for you on your journey through endless dungeons. The treasure that you find can be used to upgrade your castle, craft items, learn new spells and empower your creatures.

Now that Aqua Moto Racing Utopia has been released, developer Zordix has moved onto something a little more seasonal: Snow Moto Racing Freedom. Now on snow mobiles, players get to race through a winter wonderland where they can choose their own path and string stunts together to boost past their opponents. The game will be released later this year.

Hardware

Like the original Playstation 4 design, the PS4 Slim will soon be getting a new colour variant. You're likely not going to be surprised that it's Glacier White. Europe will be able to get their hands on the 500GB console on January 24th. Japan gets a choice of 500GB or 1TB hard drive but has to wait until February 23rd for it to hit retailers.

Updates and Game Patches

Players around the world will soon be receiving the latest software update for the Playstation 4. Before that happens, you can sign up to be a beta tester for the update. Starting from now and lasting until the beta begins at the start of February, you can fill out the form here to become part of the program.

Codemasters may well have just delisted a few of their older racing titles, but DiRT Rally is still going strong. In fact, they're going to be adding Playstation VR support to the title. The upgrade will be available as a standalone DLC for existing players — it will cost £9.99 or regional equivalent. Alternatively, players can buy the full DiRT Rally PLUS VR Upgrade that includes the full game and the update.

Minecraft and Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition (PS3) received a small update that brought the game to version 1.40. The patch notes are below:

Rock Band Rivals will be getting an update in January that brings along a free song. Have a listen to "S.O.M.P." by Skratch 'N Snyf, described as "the most epic hair metal song of all time".

After months of trying, Lab Zero Games has managed to sort out Skullgirls 2nd Encore multiplayer lobbies for all three Playstation platforms. You can see them running smoothly in the video below. Meanwhile, the amount of time that it has taken for getting these to work has affected the shipping date of the game's Limited Run and they can no longer guarantee that this will ship later this month. The lobbies patch has been submitted to Sony and will be released as soon as it is approved. Once the Limited Run is being shipped, Lab Zero will also release a new Japanese voice patch for the digital PS4 and Vita versions of the game.

Verdun will be getting a new squad by the end of the month. The Scottish Highlanders, otherwise known as the ladies from hell, will be aggressively scouting in the game. Their weapon of choice will be the distinctive Pattern 1914 Enfield.

Release Dates

Playstation Vita title A Rose in the Twilight (JP) (Vita) will be heading to North America and Europe on April 11th. However, in less positive news, PS4 title Night In The Woods has been delayed. The latter title will now be released on February 21st.

Trailers

It would have been really remiss of Friday the 13th: The Game if they had missed a real Friday the 13th to reveal something about their game. They didn't disappoint. Here's a gameplay reveal of Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th, Part 6: Jason Lives.

Rogue Aces also showcased some new gameplay of an escort mission. The allied paratroopers are successfully dropped at their target location, but the flight home is perilous. Will the pilot survive?

Finally, Vikings – Wolves of Midgard showcased some of the environments that players can explore, as well as the formidable bosses that can be found within them. You'll also get a look at the magical abilities and progression systems that will aid players in the task to slay the Norse enemies.

Screenshots

Full Throttle Remastered will be arriving for Playstation 4 and Vita later this year. Of course, we'll no longer be looking at 1995 visuals and gameplay mechanics. This week, Double Fine's Tim Schafer confirmed that the game will be getting "new artwork, 3D high resolution backgrounds and animation, improved and uncompressed sound effects and music, a concept art browser and commentary track featuring the game’s original creators". Take a look at those new visuals:

We've seen many images of God of War's Kratos and his son, but this week we finally found out that his son's name is Atreus. Sony released some new artwork of both characters, just in case we had forgotten what they look like already.

Miscellaneous

Finally, developer SideQuest Studios detailed the crafting system for their upcoming PS4, PS3 and Vita title Rainbow Skies. Materials can be merged with equipment and weapons to enable players to upgrade them, level them up and gain XP. As weapons level up, they will unlock more crafting slots, allowing more potential for upgrades. Crafting crystals can be found throughout the world and these can also be used to upgrade equipment. For more details on the crafting system, check out the developer's blog post.

That's it for this weekend. Keep your eyes on TT for the rest of the week as we bring you the news as we get it.
