Playstation Experience Roundup: Part 1 - Updates and Surprise Releases

By Rebecca Smith,
Unless you were living under a rock, you would have seen that Sony's annual Playstation Experience event took place last weekend. While we brought the announcements of Uncharted The Lost Legacy, Marvel vs Capcom Infinite and The Last of Us Part II to you as soon as we could, our real life working hours meant that we still missed a lot of stuff. As such, here it is in roundup form. All eight parts of it. Part 1 begins with a brief overview of what you can expect, followed by the surprise updates and new titles that were released over the last few days.

The first trailer showcases many of the Playstation 4's upcoming and recently released titles. Some were only announced during PSX and we will be introducing those in more detail in later parts. How many titles do you recognise?

Some of the footage in the following trailer was just seen in the last one. Here is a more in-depth look at some of Sony's upcoming Playstation VR titles:

The final sizzle trailer showcases some of the indie titles that were likely missed in between all of the AAA announcements. Here they are:

Updates

Moving on to more specific titles, some revealed large updates while they were at PSX. The first of these was EVE: Valkyrie whose Gatecrash update was released today. Aside from the enhanced visuals and performance offered to PS4 Pro players, the update included a new Gateway multiplayer map where pilots can be catapulted from one end of the map to the other via warp points. A new pilot customisation system also allows players to make their pilots look as ridiculous as they wish with new helmets and suits that can be purchased with in-game currency. Take a look at the new patch in action:

The next game to announce an update was The King of Fighters XIV. Ver 1.10 won't be arriving until January, but it will include "significant graphical improvements, 2 new colour variations per character, and many more features". Later this month, a new demo will be released onto the Playstation Store for players to preview the update before it arrives.

Soon, Street Fighter V will be starting Season 2. The first character to be released as part of Season 2 will be Akuma, the Master of the Fist.

A staple of the Street Fighter series ever since his secret appearance in Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Akuma is a savage, but well-honed Ansatsuken master consumed by the Satsui no Hado. Akuma represents the danger Ryu faces if he is unable to control the Satsui no Hado within him, and while Akuma appears to have some set of morals, he believes the highest form of battle is that in which participants put their lives on the line.

Akuma returns to Street Fighter V, displaying his mastery of Ansatsuken and while he has become burlier than previous games, he possesses quick footwork and devastating combos. He has a wide array of destructive tools and is able to completely out-class opponents with his oppressive pressure. His moves and stances often strike poses reminiscent of Buddhist statues and Ukiyo-e paintings.

Akuma will arrive on December 20th, as well as the game's holiday content. This includes B-Boy Ryu and B-Girl Chun-Li. Finally, there will be Akuma’s Story, Premium Battle and Nostalgia costumes released on the same day. The 2017 Character Pass will allow players to pre-purchase all six Season 2 fighters, as well as Premium Battle Costumes with colors 3-10 unlocked and default costume colors 3-10 for each character; it will set you back $29.99 / €29.99 / £24.99 if you're interested.
