Rare and Expensive Games: Not Really Worth the Ticket PricePermalink
Gaming is an expensive hobby. All gamers know this; it’s just a fact of life. Why make it any more expensive than it already is with collector’s editions and paying top dollar for older games just because they’re rare? That is a question I can’t answer for everyone, but I can give you my thoughts on why paying some of these game’s asking price is a really stupid thing to do.

Let’s first take a look at collector’s editions for games. New games on current generation consoles run about $64 after tax where I live. To me, that’s insane given that I don’t even know if I’ll like the particular game I’m buying. That’s me placing a lot of faith in game developers to make me feel like a particular game was worth my $64 dollar investment. That’s not too insane though, I could be one of countless people who spend even more, sometimes more than double the initial asking price, for collector’s editions. I’m not saying I don’t get it. It’s cool to be able to have some cool bonus items for a few extra bucks, you may even get an awesome statue out of it, but the asking price vs. quality of product is very questionable in a lot of cases. What’s worse is the collector’s editions that include nothing more than an art book, a making of DVD, and maybe a steelbook case for the game and still demand more than $60. This kind of stuff should be pre-order bonuses (Beyond: Two Souls got it right) not a justifiable collector’s edition. Then, you have the collector’s editions which retail for more than $1000. Who are these special editions made for? Saint’s Row 4 had a collector’s edition that retailed for $1000000; Grid 2 had one that retailed for $1.9 million (that one included a real car but still). Both of these games are fun, but spending at least $1 million on a game? Excuse my French, but WHAT. THE. FUCK? Resident Evil 6 had a collector’s edition that went for $1300, and included a replica of Leon Kennedy’s jacket. Resident Evil 6 is a terrible game in its own right, but $1300 for a JACKET, that’s just beyond anything I can wrap my head around. Uncharted 2 had its own collector’s edition that included a replica of the Perva dagger that goes for around $5000 on eBay, and aside from the dagger, you get a strategy guide and the game. I don’t know, maybe I just don’t get it, or I’m not a true collector of games, but these prices are absolutely nuts to me.

Now we’re going to talk about something that irks me even more than overly expensive collector’s editions, even more overly expensive retro games. It should be noted that I do not consider myself a video game collector, though to some I may be, so I may not understand the excitement that comes with owning an extremely rare game, but I am going to point out the stupidity of spending the ridiculous amount of money some of these games go for. I’m going to start with a personal story. Back in 2010 I found out about a game called Rule of Rose. It was a survival horror game made by Atlus, and I was absolutely captivated by its art style. After doing a bit of research I found out a lot of people hated it because the game is essentially one big fetch quest that was extremely slow in pace. Despite all this negative publicity towards Rule of Rose, I found a copy of the game practically brand new on Amazon from a Catholic charity (I did get a nice hand written note included with my game assuring me my purchase went to help orphans and was signed by a pastor) for $35. I popped the game into my PS2 that night and fell head over heels in love with the game (and then laughed at the fact that the game had come from a Catholic charity). Fast forward 2 years, my house was burglarized and the thieves stole a lot of my games, all of which were Xbox 360 games. After I started replacing my games I got curious to see what the value of the games they didn’t take were. Low and freaking behold, Rule of Rose skyrocketed in value and was now going for about $100. A game that practically everyone hates because of what it is, is now selling for $100. I don’t understand how someone could want to spend $100 for a used game that they could potentially despise. This isn’t the only example of this, there are tons of NES games that go for several thousand dollars that don’t look like any fun whatsoever, and are only that expensive because they are “rare”. Rare does not mean good; like I said, I’m not a collector so I may not understand why people want to own things simply because they are rare. What’s even more frustrating is Earthbound. Earthbound is not a rare game, but it goes for around $150 cart only on eBay; even if the cartridge was rare (which in reality it’s not) it’s still available on the WiiU eShop for just a few dollars. I know a lot of you, myself included, like owning physical copies of games, but when my choice is $150 or $10, I’m always going to go with the cheaper version, especially if I’ve never played the game before. This goes for any game that I have to pay any more than $60 for, rare or not, if it’s not fun to me, then what’s the point of spending all that money other than to say “hey look at what I have?”

Like I said, I may not understand why people spend a ton of money on games. You can chock it up to bad experiences, or just plain frugality. I don’t know, but I do know that some people like their games WAY more than I ever will.
